Video & Audio Journalist
The Toronto Star is Canada's largest daily newspaper and is read in print and across desktop, mobile and tablet platforms by more than 6 million readers every week. Online, is one of the most-visited newspaper websites in Canada.
Our Commitment To Diversity
We strive to be a leader in building and cultivating an employee community framed around fairness, support and opportunity. We believe that what makes us different, makes a difference. And as a team, the diversity of our backgrounds, interests and experiences is what enriches our work, and our workplaces. We welcome all, and we strive for an inclusive culture that allows individual growth and shared success.
The Toronto Star is seeking a highly motivated and exceptionally efficient Video & Audio Journalist to join our dynamic newsroom. This role is essential for increasing the volume and consistency of our multimedia output across all digital platforms. This role falls within the Journalist classification in the Star's editorial department.
The video & audio journalist will be production focused. This is not an on-camera or on-mic role, however, that work could be required occasionally. The ideal candidate is a journalist at heart who thrives in a high-paced, high-volume environment and views their primary function as the rapid execution of video and audio content that meets the Star's established standards and editorial strategy.
What You Will Do
This position is heavily focused on the speed and volume of production and is driven by assignments and established formats. The successful candidate will:
- Execute high-volume video production: Rapidly cut, edit, and assemble short-form video content daily, operating under tight deadlines to dramatically increase the Star's published video output.
- Mix and edit some audio post-production: Take raw audio feeds (interviews, reporter reads, segments) and quickly mix, clean, master, and prepare them for publication as podcasts or embedded audio features, ensuring professional, broadcast-quality sound.
- Adhere to highest editorial standards: Work closely with assigning editors, journalists, designers and producers, working with pre-set formats, visual templates, and narrative instructions for both video and audio content to ensure brand and editorial consistency.
- Shoot and capture: Be readily available to shoot video and capture high-quality audio in the newsroom (interviews, stand-ups, b-roll, and demonstrations) and occasionally on quick assignments outside the newsroom as dictated by the daily news list.
- Ensure journalistic integrity: Apply a journalist's rigor to all content, ensuring accuracy, fairness, and adherence to the Star's ethical guidelines, even while working on a high volume of assignments.
- Manage assets: Ingest, organize, and manage video and audio assets quickly and efficiently in a shared newsroom environment.
Salary: $60, $95,740.19
To apply, please submit a cover letter, resume and three samples of your video/audio work by Nov. 14, 2025.
This is a notice of vacancy under Article 8 of collective agreement between Toronto Star Newspapers Limited and Unifor Local 87M. The hours of work for this position will vary according to the assignment but will all conform to a standard 35-hour work week as described under the collective agreement. This position will be located in Toronto.
QualificationsWe are seeking a candidate with a strong portfolio that demonstrates journalistic excellence, production efficiency and technical mastery.
- Proven production experience: 5+ years of professional experience working in video and audio in a high-tempo news environment (digital news organization, or comparable media company).
- Dual editing proficiency:
- Video: Expert-level proficiency in non-linear editing programs (i.e. Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro).
- Audio: Expert-level proficiency in digital audio editing programs (i.e. Adobe Audition)
- Technical skills: Deep familiarity with professional video camera operation, lighting, and newsgathering audio equipment and a mastery of audio recording and mixing equipment (microphones, recorders, mixers) for newsgathering and studio podcasting. Must be able to set up and break down a shoot quickly in various environments.
- Relentlessly high journalistic standards: A fundamental understanding of news values, story structure, and media ethics.
- Efficiency and reliability: A documented ability to meet multiple daily deadlines and deliver clean, technically sound video.
- Team player: Create and contribute to an environment of growth, demonstrate enthusiasm and support colleagues in their work.
