The Opportunity: The Indigenous Navigator is responsible for enhancing equitable access to post-secondary education for First Nation, Inuit, and Métis (FNMI) students. This role supports Indigenous students throughout their academic journey by fostering connections with culturally appropriate college and community-based services. The Indigenous Navigator ensures that services are culturally safe and accessible, while advocating for the needs of FNMI students.

Key responsibilities include providing direct support and advocacy by facilitating student transition planning, organizing information sessions, promoting service fairs, and bridging gaps in access to essential services. The Navigator assists students in progressing through the post-secondary system by minimizing cultural barriers and ensuring they receive accurate and relevant information. In addition, the role involves identifying and documenting the evolving needs of Indigenous students and advising on the development of guidelines and standards to better serve them.

The Indigenous Navigator also plays a critical role in promoting cultural awareness within the institution. By ensuring that the voices of Indigenous students are heard and acknowledged, the Navigator helps foster an inclusive environment where cultural diversity is respected and valued. Collaboration with the Indigenous Studies department and other college units is essential to ensure a coordinated and respectful approach to student engagement and success. The successful candidate will be of Indigenous ancestry.

What you need to be successful:

  • 2-year diploma in Social Service Worker – Indigenous Specialization, Human Services, or equivalent
  • A minimum of two years practical experience working within an Indigenous community or organization is required
  • Familiarity with post-secondary education programs and related services is essential
  • The incumbent will possess a thorough knowledge of Indigenous culture through lived experience and meaningful community connection
  • Demonstrated success in a client service environment
  • The incumbent will possess strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, demonstrated ability to support and assist others
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Excellent written/verbal communication and customer service skills
  • Microsoft365 computer proficiency required
  • Familiarity with other computer applications and technology is an asset
  • Valid Class G driver's license

This is an I/O full-time support staff vacancy, Payband E – $ $34.42 (starting rate $29.83), 35 hours/week.

NOTE: I/O staff, Appendix D and PT staff are considered internal applicants. This I/O position will end on March 31, 2026 with possibility of extension based on funding.
