Nakehndan - Knowing Your Truth is an Indigenous not-for-profit organization supporting Indigenous survivors of sexual assault and their families to heal as a unit. Nakehndan offers a variety of culturally infused programming to women and families in Sault Ste. Marie and surrounding areas in a non-frontline capacity.
Our Mission is to empower sexual assault survivors through a variety of culturally infused programming and services that support survivors and their families to heal together. Our Vision is to create a safe space for Indigenous women and families to access wraparound supports that help them in their healing journey.
JOB SUMMARY:
This is a full-time position with Nakehndan - Knowing Your Truth. Reporting to the Transition & Housing Manager, the Health & Wellness Worker will provide full-time support and ensure day-to-day operations of programs are run in a professional and efficient manner with attention to confidentiality and compliance with Nakehndan's mission, vision, values, and practice. The Health & Wellness Worker will be responsible for the Wiidookaashin Program, coordinating counselling for clients, organizing trauma-informed workshops, managing the self-care closet, and often working in partnership with the Noojimo'iwewin (Healing) Program. This position will also work closely with other agencies, acting as a resource navigator between organizations.
This position may require you to work evenings and weekends. It may also require you to work in a stressful environment, sometimes dealing with women in crisis situations. The ability to function flexibly, independently, and under pressure while managing situations, including emergencies, is an ongoing expectation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Schedules and coordinates Trauma Informed Workshops and Counselling Sessions
- Acts as a resource navigator between outside organizations and Nakehndan
- Organizes workshops promoting Self-Care
- Creates and accurately records surveys from workshops
- Organizes and manages various aspects of running the Care Closet and Wellness Kits
- Maintains respectful, effective, open, and honest communication with clients and staff
- Maintains confidentiality, privacy, and record keeping in accordance with Nakehndan Policies
- Ensures all required reporting is fully completed and filed appropriately
- Ensures the program functions within the operating budget for the year
- Represent Nakehndan at community events and meetings
- Implements programs based on planning, objectives, policies, and procedures
- Supporting other programs as needed with notice, promoting a team environment
- From time to time may be asked to administer different projects as they arise
- Performs other duties as required
Skills and Ability
- Excellent ability to deal professionally, effectively, and non-judgmentally with a broad range of personalities, needs, cultures, and abilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills:
- Solid time management skills, with the ability to complete and prioritize a variety of tasks within a given timeline, with adherence to important deadlines
- Accurately track and submit program expenses, invoices, and other financial records
- Computer-literate and has a solid understanding of Microsoft Office and the use of Google Workplace.
- Ability to speak confidently in front of groups, including strong presentation skills
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
- Progressive understanding of persistent mental illness, addictions, and other challenges, and how these issues impact overall health, well-being, and quality of life.
- Understanding of the intergenerational trauma that occurs as a result of colonization, Residential Schools, the Sixties Scoop, and other oppressive systems, as well as the history of Indigenous peoples in Canada.
Qualifications
- Required to produce a favourable Vulnerable Sector Check
- Required valid Driver's License and access to an insured vehicle
- Diploma and or degree in Social Work or related field, and/or a minimum of 5-7 years of relevant work experience
- Certification in Mental Health First Aid, suicide prevention, and/or restorative practice with Anishinaabe populations is considered an asset
Experience:
- Required minimum of two years of experience in the housing field
- Required experience in working cooperatively and non-judgmentally with people with lived experience, mental health, etc.
- Required experience working with Indigenous peoples and an awareness of the impacts of colonization.
- Required experience in dealing with Anishinaabe/Indigenous family dynamics and Anishinaabe/Indigenous communities.
- Required knowledge of Anishinaabe culture, traditions, ceremonies, and teachings
- Preference given to those with experience working with survivors of Sexual Assault (SA), Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), Gender Based Violence (GBV), and Human Trafficking (HT)
- Preference given to those with experience working with non-profit organizations, family support, social services, and/or related fields.
- Preference given to those with knowledge (working or fluent) of Anishinaabemowin
