**Job Title: Business Intelligence Specialist - Senior
Location: Toronto, ON (Onsite)
Duration: 8 Months (Possible Extension)
Client: Public Sector (Preferred)
Pay Rate: C$75-C$85/hr
Role Overview**
The Senior Business Intelligence Specialist will support enterprise-wide analytics and business intelligence initiatives. This role focuses on designing, developing, and supporting BI solutions that enable data-driven decision-making, advanced analytics, and strategic insights across programs and business areas.
The consultant will work closely with business stakeholders, technical teams, and leadership to translate analytical needs into scalable BI and analytics solutions, while ensuring data quality, reliability, accessibility, and compliance with applicable standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Support enterprise business information requirements through the design, development, and support of business intelligence solutions
- Develop and maintain customized query and reporting applications to analyze key business data
- Implement guided analysis, drill-down functionality, automated report scheduling, alerts, and notifications (key trends and opportunities)
- Analyze source system data to identify data quality issues (e.g., missing values, duplicates, invalid data)
- Design and implement feedback processes to correct data issues at the source
- Develop, implement, and maintain ETL processes (initial and incremental loads) across relational and multidimensional data repositories
- Build automation scripts for data extraction, cleansing, transformation, and loading
- Develop monitoring, scheduling, dependency management, and error notification processes for data pipelines
- Produce scheduled and ad-hoc research models, dashboards, and analytical reports
- Conduct troubleshooting and root-cause analysis for BI and analytics solutions
- Perform process decomposition, business process mapping, and re-engineering using UML and related methodologies
- Develop enterprise architecture deliverables including business, logical, and physical data models
- Provide consulting services to business partners on analytics strategies, tools, and best practices
- Participate in proof-of-concept and proof-of-technology initiatives
- Support release, infrastructure sustainment, and time-sensitive analytics priorities
- Contribute to project planning, estimation, risk identification, and mitigation strategies
- Provide training, guidance, and mentorship to business users and project teams
Skills and Experience Requirements
Core Technical Skills (35%)
- Demonstrated experience with database design and development (e.g., SQL Server, Oracle)
- Experience developing BI and analytics roadmaps
- Advanced knowledge of data visualization tools and techniques (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, R Shiny)
- Experience with data preparation and scripting tools (e.g., Python, DAX, OpenRefine)
- Strong experience with data warehousing, dashboards, and analytics platforms
- Expertise in ETL development for large relational and multidimensional data stores
- Strong background in statistics, econometrics, probability, and modelling techniques
- Experience with statistical analysis, data mining, machine learning, and advanced analytics
- Hands-on experience using R, SAS, SPSS, or similar analytical tools
Other Technical & Functional Skills (35%)
- Minimum
10+ years
of experience in business intelligence, analytics, or business analysis - Experience working with large, diverse, structured and unstructured data sets
- Strong experience in analytical solution design, development, testing, and implementation
- Experience producing detailed project plans, estimates, and analytical documentation
- Strong understanding of data management, financial analysis, database architecture, and information visualization
- Experience designing intuitive, high-quality user interfaces for analytical insights
- Proficiency in query languages and one or more programming or scripting languages
Communication & Consulting Skills (20%)
- Strong experience engaging directly with business stakeholders and senior leadership
- Ability to translate business needs into functional and technical requirements
- Experience producing technical specifications, system designs, and architectural artifacts
- Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities
- Proven ability to work collaboratively across multiple teams
- Demonstrated ability to meet tight deadlines in complex project environments
- Strong consulting, facilitation, and relationship-management skills
Public Sector Experience (10%)
- Experience working within public-sector environments is an asset
- Experience delivering solutions compliant with government IT standards is an asset
- Strong understanding of public-sector data governance, compliance, and reporting challenges
