Position Overview
The Special Education Resource Teacher (SERT) plays a critical role in supporting students with diverse learning needs and strengthening inclusive classroom practices. This role focuses on collaboration, assessment, and targeted intervention, working closely with classroom teachers, school administration, families, and community partners.
The SERT supports students with identified special education needs, including those with Individual Education Plans (IEPs), and helps classroom teachers adapt instruction, assessment, and learning environments so all students can succeed—academically, socially, and emotionally.
This position is well-suited for educators who are adaptable, reflective, student-centred, and committed to culturally responsive education in a remote Indigenous community context.
Duties
- Provide targeted, individualized, and small-group support to students with special education needs, including the development and ongoing management of Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
- Collaborate with classroom teachers to adapt instruction, assessment, and learning environments to support diverse learners.
- Support assessment, progress monitoring, and data-informed decision-making to guide interventions and transitions.
- Engage and communicate with families and community members in a respectful, culturally grounded manner.
- Work collaboratively with school staff and partners while maintaining professional standards and participating in ongoing professional learning.
Experience
- Member in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT).
- Special Education qualifications (Part 1 or higher) required or a demonstrated plan to obtain.
- Experience supporting students with special education needs is strongly preferred.
- Experience working in Indigenous, remote, or culturally diverse school settings is an asset.
- Strong collaboration, organization, and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a remote, fly-in community environment.
- Successful Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.
Commitment to Equity
KEA welcomes applications from all qualified candidates. Preference is given to First Nations, Inuit and Métis educators and to those committed to reconciliation and culturally responsive practice. Self-identification is encouraged.
