The Opportunity

The Purchasing Manager actively manages the day-to-day purchasing function for the St. Boniface division. Ensures supply continuity, good supplier relationships, and solid suppliers' performance on Quality, Cost, and Delivery. This role requires superior negotiation, project management, and coaching skills and a capability to work under ambiguity to deliver business financial targets. This role requires deep expertise in steel procurement, including understanding market dynamics, mill relationships, and contract structures specific to carbon, stainless, and galvanized steel. Must be able to navigate volatile pricing environments and secure favorable terms through strategic negotiation and long-term supplier partnerships This role identifies cost reduction opportunities for direct and indirect spend while building a fact-based business case to ensure project approval, acceptance and inclusion in strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with Manufacturing Operations, Engineering, Planning & Scheduling, etc to implement strategic and tactical objectives, define priorities to support AGI financial objectives.
  • Develop and execute steel sourcing strategies aligned with production forecasts and market trends.
  • Monitor global and regional steel indices (e.g., CRU, Platts) to inform purchasing decisions and timing.
  • Lead negotiations with mills, service centres, and brokers to secure optimal pricing, delivery schedules, and payment terms.
  • Evaluate and mitigate risks related to steel availability, tariffs, and geopolitical factors.
  • Collaborate with Engineering and Manufacturing to align steel specifications with cost and availability.
  • Ensure supply continuity. Manage with intensity: Inventory, Cost, Quality, Delivery and Warranty associated with Supplier Relationship.
  • Develop internal and external benchmarks and metrics to support AGI site objectives and ONE AGI Supply Chain objectives.
  • Manage S&OP process and makes decisions to benefit the business.
  • Collaborate in the development and execution of multi-year savings plans.
  • Implement the category strategies and build positive relationships with internal partners and suppliers.
  • Support supplier selection and contract negotiation process for key projects.
  • Maintain appropriate Supplier Relationship Management programs for strategic and critical suppliers in the concerned categories of spend.
  • Develop and manage working relationships with both internal AGI functions and suppliers to manage resolution of supplier issues.
  • Drive standardization and efficiency improvements across the plant purchasing team; ensure policies, processes and procedures are in compliance with ONE AGI initiatives.
  • Coach and mentors Purchasing team to ensure succession planning and strong talent bench.
  • Other Supply Chain and business activities assigned in accordance with the role.
  • Follow AGI's Code of Business Ethics and related compliance policies.
  • Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in the field of business or equivalent.
  • 5-7 years' progressive experience in purchasing and inventory management field preferably in a manufacturing environment.
  • Proven experience in steel purchasing within a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Strong understanding of steel grades, specifications, and applications.
  • Demonstrated success in negotiating steel contracts and managing supplier performance.
  • Familiarity with steel market forecasting tools and cost modelling.
  • Must have working knowledge of safety stock levels, min/max levels, reorder points what inventory turns mean for the business.
  • Personal computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including customer service, listening, teamwork, and follow through.
  • Basic math, statistical accounting skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with extensive phone etiquette, tact, and discretion.
  • Decision-making and analytical/problem solving skills.
  • Strong conflict resolution, relationship building, sales and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple tasks at same time and to meet deadlines/goals.
  • Organized, detailed, and results oriented.
