THE ROLE:
The Estimator, General Contracting is responsible for developing detailed and accurate cost estimates and budgets for a wide range of construction projects - including invitational and public tenders, cost-plus, lump-sum, and design-build contracts.
This position plays a critical role in preparing bid proposals, ensuring that all aspects of project scope, materials, equipment, and subcontractor pricing are accounted for. The Estimator collaborates with project managers, coordinators, and field staff to ensure that estimates are realistic, competitive, and reflective of Acres' standards of quality and excellence.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Department Participation
- Participate in departmental meetings to review initiatives, priorities, and estimating progress.
- Stay current with construction methods, market trends, and industry technologies.
- Build deep expertise in contract formats, trade knowledge, and construction processes.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with subcontractors and suppliers to support accurate and timely estimating.
Estimating Process
- Review all project documentation - including drawings, specifications, contract requirements, and site conditions - to develop a full understanding of project scope and potential risks.
- Prepare accurate quantity take-offs, detailed cost breakdowns, and preliminary schedules using estimating software and industry-standard methods.
- Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and supplier pricing, ensuring clarity of scope, competitiveness, and alignment with project requirements.
- Identify needs for RFIs and incorporate clarifications into the estimate.
- Conduct pre-bid site visits when required to assess constructability, site constraints, and project-specific cost impacts.
- Build estimates that include labour, equipment, materials, overhead, soft costs, and recommended mark-ups based on project complexity and competitiveness.
- Support Project Managers and Coordinators with pricing for scope changes and change orders.
- Prepare clear, professional bid letters and proposal documentation including scope, inclusions, exclusions, and assumptions.
- Participate in project start-up meetings, providing insight into estimate details, key materials, subcontractors, and cost drivers.
- Track actual project costs post-award to evaluate estimating accuracy and recommend updates to formulas, pricing structures, and assumptions.
Collaboration and Reporting
- Maintain organized, accurate, and accessible estimating files.
- Foster cross-department collaboration and support a positive, solutions-focused team culture.

Personal Management
- Submit vacation requests in advance to ensure bid coverage.
- Provide expense reports for work-related reimbursements.
- Foster collaboration within the Industrial Contracting team and across departments.

CANDIDATE PROFILE:
- 5–10 years of estimating experience in general contracting, commercial, institutional, or multi-disciplinary construction environments.
- Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, building systems, and project sequencing.
- Proven ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, contracts, and municipal/regulatory requirements.
- Skilled in preparing both qualitative and quantitative cost analyses, with a high attention to detail and accuracy.
- Proficient with estimating software (Heavy Bid or similar), Microsoft Excel, and project scheduling tools.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to assess risks and develop accurate cost projections.
- Effective communicator with experience collaborating across teams including project management, field operations, and procurement.
- Well-developed relationships with subcontractors and suppliers in the region are an asset.
- Highly organized, adaptable, and able to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
