The Kitchen Coordinator at XEXE PAHLATSIS LELUM will provide supportive care to First Nations, Inuit, and MÈtis Family Members (FM) by fostering an environment that provides education and support surrounding healthy eating, food preparation, and kitchen hygiene delivered in a culturally rooted way. The Kitchen Coordinator will ensure the traditional way of sharing meals is celebrated, facilitated, and upheld in the community space, for all women in their various stages of pregnancy, childbirth, and postnatal care. In doing so, this will promote healthier outcomes for parents and newborns.

Position Type: Temporary Full-time
Wage: $27.81 per hour
JOB SUMMARY
Responsibilities:
- Prepare two meals per day to be served at times as outlined by the House Manager (as well as snacks and refreshments to be served throughout the evening). These will be delivered as a "sit down" meal where the Family Members come together in the community area.
- Work with the House Manager to budget and forecast for food and kitchen supplies.
- Maintain respectful, effective, open, and honest communication with the Family Members, co-workers, and Manager. Take initiative to build positive relationships and rapport with Family Members.
- Engaging with Family Members during scheduled life-skills programming as it pertains to food security and supporting Family Members in this way to meet their goals.
- If required, provide conflict resolutions between Family Members using de-escalation and crisis intervention training and best practices.
- Actively participate in all staff development, meetings, and training sessions.
- Work within the constraints of a limited food budget when preparing and submitting food orders in consultation with the House Manager.
- Meet the physical demands of the position including deep cleaning, moving kitchen inventory, organizing, lifting heavy objects, etc.
- Responsible for reviewing and adhering to all ACEH policies and procedures including new direction from management.
- When available, create meals with food boxes that come weekly with varying produce, dairy, and protein products.
- Focus on nutritious, healthy food while highlighting traditional foods and traditional preparation techniques.
- May be required to support in the preparation, participation, or facilitation of cooking classes with new moms as part of the life-skills programming offered at Sacred Cradle House. Working closely with the Perinatal Programs Coordinator in the delivery of these services.
- Notable interactions and supports with the families served.
- Updating the House Manager on notable interactions with families that may impact their wellness and care planning Interactions of note may include behavioral, emotional, spiritual, mental, and/or nutritionally related interactions.
- Safely prepare food while considering different allergies, food sensitivities and restrictions. Staying up to date on these needs with the information provided by the House Manager.
- At times the kitchen space will be a shared space for learning with our families. Please be mindful of this for your workflow and process.
- Keeping the kitchen clean, sanitary, and safe, following all health and safety guidelines.
- Performs other related duties as requested by the House Manager
Required Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to multitask and push multiple projects to completion simultaneously
- Understanding of the intergenerational trauma that occurs because of colonization, Residential Schools, Sixties Scoop, and other oppressive systems as well as the history of Indigenous peoples in Canada
- Ability to work in a holistic, professional, and non-judgmental manner as you are working with a broad range of personalities, needs, cultures, lived experiences and abilities.
- Satisfactory outcome of a Criminal Record Check through the Ministry of Justice for Working with Vulnerable Adults; the ACEH reserves the right to subsequent Criminal Record Checks throughout your employment as needed.
- Required valid First Aid certificate.
- Required Food Safe Certificate.
- 1-year related experience working with vulnerable peoples and or providing care. Preference given to those who have worked with Indigenous peoples and have training/ education in relevant Indigenous post-secondary.
- Preferred Naloxone Overdose Training and Certification.
- Preferred Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification.
- Experience or personal insights working cooperatively with people with disabilities, lived experience, and addictions considered an asset.
- Experience working with non-profit organizations, family support, social services, and Indigenous support services and programs considered an asset
