Investment Intern Program

UBC Investment Management Inc. (UBCIM) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the University of British Columbia, providing professional investment management for the UBC Endowment Fund, Staff Pension Plan and other UBC-related funds. The funds are invested globally across all major public and private asset classes and in aggregate value exceed $6 billion.

The Intern program provides students and recent graduates with the opportunity to work with the three teams at UBCIM that span the investment process: Manager Selection, Total Portfolio Management, and Investment Operations. Intern responsibilities may include:

Manager Due Diligence and Monitoring

• Assist in evaluating UBCIM's existing portfolio construction, identifying the risk and opportunities facing each asset class, measuring and attributing historic performance, and performing stress testing and scenario analysis.
• Review investment managers' quarterly reports, including performance metrics, portfolio composition, risk factors, fund deployment and other relevant data.
• Participate in meetings with prospective and existing investment managers, taking accurate and detailed notes during meetings to capture key discussion points and summarize for internal reference and decision-making purposes.
• Utilize our customer relationship management (CRM) system to track interactions and maintain up-to-date records, ensuring it is an accurate repository for information related to investment managers.

Total Portfolio Management

• Monitor the asset class weightings of UBCIM managed portfolios and assist in the management of asset class exposures.
• Assist in upkeeping UBCIM's database of portfolio exposures and monitor aggregated holdings exposures of investment portfolios.
• Assist in producing regular investment risk reports and develop summary messages for the investment team.
• Review portfolio performance results and contribute to producing performance attribution reports. Generate summary reporting for the investment team, aligning performance results with market developments and manager performance.
• Contribute to the ongoing research and analysis of total portfolio management practices, such as rebalancing and currency hedging methodologies.
• Perform ad hoc analysis as required.

Investment Operations

• Maintain and reconcile investment accounting and performance system.
• Assist with monitoring cash flows, coordinating trade instructions and transfers between managers and the custodian.
• Liaise with the custodian to ensure accurate and timely delivery of monthly reports and other deliverables.
• Review external investment manager fee invoices and calculations.
• Assist with the completion of investment fund documents.

Qualified Candidates will possess the following:

Relevant Coursework

Courses in financial analysis, accounting, statistics, and economics.

Project and Work Experience

Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrable work and/or project experience.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel essential; familiarity with financial software and basic programming skills (e.g., SQL, Python) preferable.
