UBC Investment Management is seeking an experienced team member to lead UBCIM's Responsible Investing function to drive enhancements in our responsible investing practices across our total portfolio, support investment manager due diligence and engagement, lead strategic initiatives and play a leading role in educating and communicating with clients and stakeholders. This role presents a great opportunity to help strengthen UBCIM's strategy and practices in responsible investing.
About the Role
This role will report to the CEO and is responsible for leading and implementing UBCIM's Responsible Investing Strategy alongside our investment team. The successful candidate will be experienced in developing and driving strategic initiatives and process enhancements in responsible investing, with a deep knowledge of leading approaches in institutional investment management, industry frameworks, and portfolio monitoring and investment manager engagement. Further, the successful candidate will possess excellent communications and education skills and experience reporting to Boards and senior executives.
The role's primary responsibilities include:
Leadership & Strategy
- Lead the development, execution and continuous refinement of UBCIM's Responsible Investing Strategy and approach
- Serve as UBCIM's subject matter expert and primary external voice on ESG factor integration and responsible investing matters.
- Oversee policies used to guide UBCIM's responsible investing practices
Integration Into the Investment Process
- Oversee the integration of ESG considerations into manager selection, monitoring and evaluation
- Partner with the investment manager selection team to assess external managers' responsible investing practices and ensure alignment with UBCIM's standards
- Provide subject matter expertise to UBCIM's team and Board.
Stewardship & Engagement
- Represent UBCIM in collaborative responsible investing initiatives with peers, industry groups and stakeholders
- Lead dialogue with investment managers on ESG-related risks, opportunities and best practices
- Drive advocacy, engagement and reporting efforts in alignment with UBCIM's and our clients' values
Reporting & Communications
- Oversee the measurement, tracking and reporting of Responsible Investing outcomes across managed portfolios
- Oversee and lead the development of UBCIM's annual Responsible Investing Report and responsible investing content in UBCIM's Annual Report
- Regular reporting to UBC Investment Management's internal investment team on portfolio exposures, manager engagement and advancements in responsible investing practices;
- Ensure compliance with responsible investing frameworks, including the PRI
- Contributing to regular and ad-hoc reporting requirements and communications for UBC's senior leadership and stakeholders, as required
Qualified candidates should possess the following:
- 10+ years of relevant experience, preferably in institutional asset management, consulting or a related field.
- Deep expertise in ESG integration and responsible investing, with demonstrated experience integrating responsible investing principles across asset classes.
- Strong understanding of institutional investment processes and working with external managers.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with a proven ability to communicate complex considerations to stakeholders in a clear and concise manner.
- Experience engaging with boards, senior leadership, and stakeholders on ESG issues.
- CFA designation, advanced degree or equivalent professional credentials would be an asset.
