Job Summary

The Growing with Guidance Program Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the delivery of the Growing with Guidance program — a cultural and intergenerational initiative that fosters meaningful relationships between children, youth, families, and Elders. This program is grounded in community values and cultural knowledge, providing healing and support for families who may benefit from prevention-based resources.

Working closely with the Program Coordinator, the Assistant will help ensure that workshops, gatherings, and land-based activities run smoothly, respectfully, and in alignment with cultural practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Program Coordinator in the planning and delivery of cultural workshops and activities
  • Support meal planning, preparation, and clean-up, reflecting traditional and community-based food values
  • Set up and take down spaces for gatherings, workshops, and land-based events
  • Greet and welcome children, youth, families, and Elders, creating a respectful and inclusive atmosphere
  • Help maintain a culturally safe space that promotes healing and learning
  • Organize and maintain supplies, materials, and program logistics
  • Provide direct, hands-on support to participants during program activities
  • Support Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and facilitators during events
  • Maintain confidentiality and uphold the values of respect, inclusion, and cultural humility

Qualifications

Required:

  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and protocols
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a warm, welcoming approach
  • Ability to work respectfully with children, youth, families, and Elders
  • Dependable, flexible, and able to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Basic cooking skills and willingness to support meal preparation
  • Comfortable with physical tasks such as setting up/taking down tables, lifting supplies, etc.

Preferred:

  • Previous experience in community programming, early childhood development, youth work, or cultural facilitation
  • Valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation
  • First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • Food Safe certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • Knowledge of a local Indigenous language or culture is an asset

Working Conditions

  • Evening and/or weekend work may be required to accommodate program schedules
  • Work may occur in indoor community spaces, kitchens, and outdoor/land-based environments
  • May involve physical activity such as lifting supplies, moving furniture, or walking on uneven terrain during land-based activities
  • A supportive team environment focused on cultural safety, community wellness, and mutual respect
  • Occasional exposure to emotionally sensitive topics or experiences requiring empathy and cultural awareness

Hours of Work

Your regular hours of work will be from 8:00am - 4:00pm for 7 hours per day from Monday to Friday and it is expected that all work will be completed within your regular working hours, however, you may be required from time to time to work outside your normal hours of work.
