Vancouver Coastal Health is looking for an Outreach Worker with working knowledge in American Sign Language (ASL) to join the Deaf Well-Being Program team in Burnaby, BC. Apply to join our team

About the Deaf Well-Being Program (WBP):

The WBP was created to provide accessible mental health services for Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Deaf-Blind clients, and in some sitautions, with their families. We provide services for those who identify themselves as culturally Deaf & communicate with sign lagnauge. We also provide services for those who may identify themselves as oral deaf, heaing impaired, or hard of hearing, as well as those who may communicate orally. 

As an Outreach Worker, Deaf Well-Being Program with Vancouver Coastal Health, you will:

  • Work as a member of an interdisciplinary team to provide support services to individuals and their families deaf, hard of hearing and deaf-blind people utilizing a health promotion model.
  • Monitor clients by methods such as observing client's health condition and environment.
  • Arrange, plan, escort and accompany clients on appointments, errands and other activities.
  • Create linkages to other community resources and programs.
  • Assist clients in accessing benefits and/or assistance as appropriate and as required provides planning and coordination on issues related to substance use, opioid agonist therapy, overdose prevention and harm reduction.
  • Liaise and work with community resources and healthcare providers.
  • Provide basic health-promoting information and promotes development of life-skills to clients.
  • Perform a variety of general clerical duties, attend meetings and participate in client care planning and coordination.
Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Diploma in Community Social Services and one (1) year related experience working with clients in a mental health setting, including experience working with deaf, hard of hearing and/or deaf-blind individuals and their families, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Fluent in American Sign Language (ASL).
  • Valid BC Driver's License. Travel will require the use of a personal vehicle.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to work with marginalized and culturally diverse populations including those with substance use issues and mental illness.
  • Demonstrated listening and information seeking skills that promotes communication and lead to a cooperative approach to problem solving within a multidisciplinary setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish rapport with clients and families in order to explore issues that are beyond the initial presented concerns.
  • Working knowledge and familiarity with health and social service programs and resources.
  • Working knowledge of harm reduction principles.
  • Crisis prevention/intervention and conflict resolution/de-escalation skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment as well as capacity to work in partnership with other community agencies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated skill in CPR techniques and First-aid.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
