Overview
The Ktunaxa Nation Council has an opportunity for Associate Director – Lands & Resources in Cranbrook BC. The Associate Director is considered the "right hand" to the Lands & Resources Director, and is responsible for implementing the vision and decisions of the Lands and Resources Sector, whose mandate focuses on the stewardship of ʔamakʔis Ktunaxa based on Ktunaxa Principles of ʔakxamis q̓api qapsin
This is a full-time permanent position with full benefits. Salary Range: $99,360- $109,613
ResponsibilitiesLeadership
- Strategic Leadership for the Sector developed through internal strategic planning and responsive to current external policy and political environments.
- Provides leadership, direction and support in the planning, development and management of the Land and Resource Sector.
- Demonstrates accountability to the Ktunaxa First Nations through cooperation and collaboration.
Stewardship
- Provides stewardship of Ktunaxa Nation Lands and Resource Sector assets and relationships, to include the standardization and implementation of all Sector strategies, deployment of resources, policies and practices to ensure alignment with the Vision, Values and Mission of the Sector.
Strategic Direction & Planning
- Participate in Lands and Resources Sector strategic planning processes and the development and implementation of collaborative workplans that consider the interests and initiatives of Ktunaxa First Nations Lands departments.
- Ensure that the Sector and Inter-Sector plans support the interests of Ktunaxa First Nations.
Programming and Resources
- Provides leadership, technical advice and support and direction, and management leadership in the development and delivery of programs that meet the needs of the Ktunaxa Communities and Nation.
- Represent the Nation's interests when assessing the potential to forge or to formalize relationship with government and other third parties.
- Lead or participate in the negotiation of Sector specific agreements; ensures that agreements are implemented in accordance with the terms agreed upon by the Ktunaxa Nation.
Human Resource Management
- In collaboration with the Director, Lands and Resources and HR, develop and approve position descriptions for positions within Lands & Resources Sector.
- Participate in the recruitment / selection of Lands & Resources Sector employees and contractors
- Conduct performance evaluations including the development of employee training and development plans, performance enhancement programs, disciplinary action as required.
Financial Management
- Oversee and monitor the administration of funding agreements.
- Manage the financial affairs of the sector and reports on the financial performance.
Administration
- Oversees the development and submission of reports to external agencies as per agreements.
- Ensures that appropriate policies and procedures are developed, communicated and implemented.
Community and Public Relations
- Directs the development and implementation of the communications and public relations strategy and plan.
- Ensures that the relationship and communications with the Citizens, Ktunaxa First Nations, other governments, public, interest groups, and other organizations and agencies is appropriate to the position, image and interests of the Sector.
Networking
- Represents Sector interests as directed, in negotiation with government and private sector.
- Acts as Sector liaison with other Sector and Nation Councils, staff, contractors, government departments, private sector and other First Nations and Indigenous organizations as authorized.
Reporting
- Prepares and presents, written and verbal, briefing notes, mandate requests and updates to:
- Ktunaxa Nation Council Society Leadership
- Ktunaxa Nation Citizens at the Annual General Meeting

- Bachelor degree - theoretical proficiency in a specialized field
- Degree in First Nations studies, public administration, resource management, or other related disciplines preferred. A combination of relevant education and experience will be considered.
Experience / Expertise
- 8-10 years experience in resource management
- Minimum 5 years working within a First Nation organization or community
- Professional level communication and computer skills
- Expertise in negotiations that are applied in formal and informal situations
- Advanced understanding of all aspects of land stewardship
- Deep understanding and awareness of the history of Ktunaxa Peoples, Residential School System, Collective Trauma, and the legal context of Indigenous Rights
- Demonstrated success at implementing traditional knowledge into mainstream assessment processes and systems
- Experience in Project Development, Implementation and Management.
