Automatic Steel Barrie is currently seeking a Saw Operator to join our operations team. In this role, you will be responsible for safely setting up and operating saw equipment to cut steel material to customer specifications. This position is ideal for someone with steel band saw experience, but we are also open to individuals with wood or production saw backgrounds who are eager to learn the steel industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate band saws and cutting equipment to process steel orders accurately and efficiently
  • Measure, mark, and cut material according to work orders and specifications (imperial measurements)
  • Inspect finished cuts to ensure quality, accuracy, and compliance with customer requirements
  • Load and position material manually or using lifting devices and overhead equipment
  • Tag, identify, and move material to designated areas
  • Perform basic equipment checks and support preventative maintenance
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area
  • Follow all company health & safety policies and standard operating procedures
  • Support general production and material handling needs as required

Qualifications

  • Experience operating band saws or industrial/production saws (steel preferred, wood welcomed)
  • Ability to accurately measure and work in imperial units (feet, inches, fractions)
  • Experience in a steel service centre or manufacturing environment is a strong asset
  • Comfortable working in an outdoor industrial environment around heavy material and machinery
  • Ability to read work orders, cut lists, or basic drawings
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Reliable, punctual, and safety-focused
  • Legally eligible to work in Canada

Assets

  • Steel industry experience
  • Forklift or overhead crane experience
  • Experience with material handling or machine operation
  • Manufacturing, fabrication, or warehouse background

Physical Requirements & Environment

  • Industrial shop environment with exposure to noise, moving equipment, and temperature changes
  • Required use of PPE (safety shoes, eye and hearing protection, etc.)
  • Regular standing, lifting, and handling of materials throughout the shift
