POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Child and Family Services Supervisor, the key role of the Community Prevention Worker is to reduce the number of children coming into care by linking families and youth to available resources, programs and services; and engaging and supporting Cultural Caregivers for those children who are unable to reside in their parental home.
This position collaborates with staff, and other external community resources as required, to coordinate and deliver prevention activities; to identify and assess trends and patterns that have implications for families, children and youth in the community; to develop and implement population and evidence based strategies to mitigate risks for children and youth; and participates in policy-making activities that influence prevention and social development practices within the community.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
· Reduce the utilization of Family Court in favor of traditional decision making processes including the Family Circle.
· Eliminate barriers that prevent families from providing safe, caring and enriching family environments for children placed in their home.
· Identify Cultural Caregivers to provide temporary and long term care for children at risk of coming into care.
· Act as the Band Designate for Child, Family and Community Service Act requirements for Kw'umut Lelum and MCFD workers.
· Provide direct assessment and outreach services to support the successful transition and ongoing stability of children with Cultural Caregivers who are residing in their home communities and those residing outside of the reserves/bands.
· Provide referrals to specialists and other professionals in areas such as addiction, trauma, and other mental health needs; promote and support programs offered by KL, Qualicum FN, and in the Snaw-Naw-As community.
· Engage with community youth to eliminate barriers and connect them with peers groups and internal and external community support and prevention resources.
· Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND ATTRIBUTES
· A level of lived experience relevant to the duties and responsibilities of this position.
· A level of education, training, or experience equivalent to a diploma in a related discipline.
· A deep understanding of First Nation people; including their history and the impacts of colonization and racism on health and well-being.
· Excellent communication skills; both written and spoken.
· A high level of emotional intelligence.
· An understanding of the significance of incorporating First Nation perspectives into delivered prevention activities, programs and services.
· The ability to work collaboratively with youth, community, and colleagues within a team-based environment.
· Ability to work independently and coordinate and manage multiple priorities.
· Understanding of trauma-informed practice and First Nations-informed harm reduction to mitigate impacts of colonization and First Nation-specific racism.
· Valid Class 5 Drivers License and use of own vehicle.
· Must successfully complete a Criminal Records Check with vulnerable sector search as per Nanoose First Nation policy.
Wage rate commensurate with experience.
