Role Responsibilities

The Assessment Services Branch is seeking a Property Assessor to support the Provincial Assessor in preparing and defending assessments for Designated Industrial (DI) Properties across Alberta. These properties include major facilities - requiring advanced analytical skills and a strong understanding of valuation models and legislation. As an Assessor, you will be at the forefront of applying legislation requirement to value, defend and communicate, while playing a vital role in maintaining a fair and transparent property assessment system that supports communities and municipalities province-wide.

Key responsibilities include: 

  • Leading the discovery, preparation, review and coordination of Designated Industrial property assessments for the provincial roll.
  • Interpreting and applying the Municipal Government Act (MGA) and related regulations to ensure compliance and consistency.
  • Providing expert assessment advice on inventory valuation and ensuring adherence to processes and procedures.
  • Assisting in the preparation of witness reports before the Land and Property Rights Tribunal as a subject matter expert.
  • Working closely with property owners and stakeholders to ensure transparency, consistency, and accuracy in assessment practices.
  • Supporting the Provincial Assessor's office by ensuring that information given to assessment stakeholders relating to DI property assessments is consistent, appropriate and in conformance with relevant legislation

Qualifications

Minimum recruitment standards outline the minimum education and experience required for appointment to a job classification.  Refer to

A degree in a related field, or related field, plus four years of related work experience in government or a field related to one of the above degrees.

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered based on:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; OR
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Assets:

  • Post secondary degree or diploma in real property appraisal and assessment
  • Accreditation with Alberta Assessors' Association (AMAA), International Association Assessing Officers (CAE), or the Appraisal Institute of Canada (AACI)
  • Previous experience in the preparation and defense of industrial property assessments
  • Understanding of operational and capital cost reporting and the Construction Cost Reporting Guide
  • Familiarity with the Machinery and Equipment Guideline
  • Excellent computer skills especially - Computer assisted mass appraisal (CAMA) assessment systems, ACCESS application for impact analysis and transferring data electronically to clients

Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 36.25 hours per week.
