Responsibilities  

  • Testing of products is performed by a different role (Tech Tester). The primary responsibility of the Staff Writer is to use the results from testing to understand how a product performs and where it fits in the market, and to communicate this understanding through various types of work:
  • Write and update buying recommendations (example)
  • Write and update product reviews (example) and comparisons between products (example)
  • Write scripts for videos that review products, compare products, or recommend products to buy (example for a different product category)
  • Interact with our community and answer questions (example)

Personality  

  • You are a networking tech enthusiast. You are aware of market news, opinions about products and what matters to the community  
  • You are familiar with the equipment and technology related to home network and online security
  • You are the type of person that cares about online security and privacy
  • You love doing research and comparing products. You typically spend weeks researching before buying something
  • You like helping people. The whole purpose of our website is to help people find the best product for them 

Qualification/Experience  

  • Must be able to demonstrate product knowledge about VPNs, Routers or any other product related to networking 
  • Strong English communication & writing skills  
  • Strong analytical skills   
  • Fast learner   
  • Previous experience writing product reviews and/or working in retail/sales is a bonus    
*We're open to hiring either an entry-level candidate, or one with more experience as follows:  
Writer I  
Entry level position, but other levels can be achieved within two years of employment.  
Salary range: $52-$57k  
  • Less than two years of professional and writing experience  
  • You are a hobbyist for one or more of the products we review in networking
  • You are familiar with the market of the products we review  
  • You are interested in learning how to write for different intended audiences and grow into Writer Level II
Writer II  
Note: Further advancement exists beyond this role.  
Salary range: $62-$85k  
  • More than two years of professional writing experience  
  • Deep interest and technical understanding of product categories in networking 
  • You participate in various hobbyist communities like subreddits and Discord channels related to those product categories 
Senior Writer 
Note: There is also a potential career path in management after Writer II, becoming a Team Lead, which is a different role. 
Salary Range: $80-105k  
  • You are a recognized voice in hobbyist communities
  • You have a deep technical understanding about networking infrastructure, online security, encryption   
  • You have written product reviews in the past   
  • You have leadership/management experience
