About Us:
Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte (MBQ) is a vibrant First Nation community located on the beautiful shores of the Bay of Quinte. We are located approximately 20 minutes from Belleville, ON and centrally located between Toronto and Ottawa. There are approximately 11,000 registered members with approximately 2200 residing in Tyendinaga. Position Summary:
The Cultural Coordinator will be responsible for the development, planning, and delivery of culture-based wellness programming and events as well as the development, distribution, and promotion of wellness-based resources and materials that focus specifically on Indigenous ways of being, traditions, and culture.
The Cultural Coordinator will also be responsible for creating and building positive working relationships and partnerships with trusted Elders and Knowledge Keepers and seeking opportunities to incorporate their participation and input into program planning and development to deliver locally accepted cultural practices and to facilitate preservation and promotion of traditional Haudenosaunee practices as well as to ensure the MBQ community and staff are grounded in cultural identity.
Reporting:
This position will report to the Mohawk Family Services Manager. This position has no direct reports.
Summary of Main Responsibilities:
Assist Mohawk Family Services Staff
o Provide consultation to staff to develop client assessments and plans which adequately and appropriately incorporate cultural aspects into service delivery.
o Manage the referrals for cultural programming through an established intake process and assign clients to the most appropriate program.
o Provide one-on-one cultural teaching and guidance, particularly for youth in care.
o Connect staff and clients with culturally relevant support as requested / needed.
o Model behaviors in a manner that serves as an example of positive cultural values, attitudes, beliefs, and actions.
Programming:
o Develop, plan, and deliver cultural and land-based wellness programming and / or events to parents / guardians, children and youth.
o Host community socials, teachings, and gatherings that support reconnection with Haudenosaunee traditions.
o Provide traditional-based activities and services to individuals and groups; prioritize service and support children, youth in-care; acquire, maintain, and care for education tools/resources (i.e. language resources, history books, art, and traditional and sacred items).
o Coordinate land-based education such as hunting, tanning, and plant medicine.
o Offer education and accessibility to members as it pertains to traditional, spiritual, and land-based healing practices, approaches, and beliefs (i.e. sweat lodge, ceremony, fasting, traditional teachings, use of and harvesting of medicines, medicinal uses of plants, etc.).
o Actively promote the application of traditional Haudenosaunee teachings such as Creation Story and The Great Law of Peace
o Work to establish an on-line presence on social media platforms with the intent of reaching a greater audience.
Creating Partnerships and Relationships
o Build and establish collaborative working relationships with Elders, Mohawk language Speakers, and Traditional Knowledge keepers to ensure that we are incorporating their presence and input into meaningful programming content and materials.
o Support opportunities for knowledge keepers to share teachings and elevate their voices in the community.
o Seeking input and feedback from community members, MBQ leadership and front-line staff as well as their trusted Elders and Traditional Knowledge Keeps ensuring that programs and information offered are responsive to the unique needs and requests.
o Foster community engagement and utilizing the land when working with children, families and the community.
Administrative Functions
o Complete administrative functions and reports, policies, procedures and relevant practices.
o Develop and maintain work plans, coordinate teams, and execute events.
o Oversee program budgets and maintain financial accountability for cultural programming.
o Ensure confidentiality and safekeeping of all documents and records.
o Develop and maintain accurate, up-to-date and concise work files.
o Develop and maintain a detailed work plan of activities.
o Compiling statistical data and fulfilling reporting requirements and adhering to deadlines.
Health and Safety:
o Promoting and following all MBQ Health and Safety policies and procedures
All other duties as required
Requirements:
While post-secondary education in Indigenous Studies or a related field is an asset, the most valued qualification for this position is a demonstrated and ongoing commitment to learning and living Haudenosaunee culture in a way that aligns with traditional methods of knowledge transmission.
A diploma or certificate in a relevant field may be considered
A minimum of 2 years of experience working within Indigenous communities or organizations is preferred.
Experience in a First Nations setting is an asset
Combination of training, education and experience may be considered (at the discretion of the organization)
Must provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check (documentation will be required if successful applicant)
First Aid and CPR an asset (and must be willing to take the training if hired)
Valid Driver's License and vehicle
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Strong knowledge of Haudenosaunee culture, values, and practices, with the ability to share teachings in a way that respects traditional protocols.
Experience learning from Elders and Knowledge Keepers, participating in cultural activities, and building relationships with sister communities.
Commitment to language learning and cultural preservation is a strong asset.
Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage confidently in both community and professional settings.
Active listening, empathy, and the ability to build trust with families, youth, and community members.
Personal integrity, wellness, and well-developed professional boundaries.
Ability to work collaboratively with team members and community partners.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook) and comfort using digital tools is considered an asset but is not prioritized over cultural skills
Ability to design, develop, deliver, and evaluate cultural educational programs and materials
Ability to provide cultural technical advice, guidance and support to professional staff
Self-manage and meet deadlines

Understanding / knowledge of traditional, spiritual, and land-based healing practices, approaches, and beliefs (i.e. sweat lodge, ceremony, fasting, traditional teachings, use of and harvesting of medicines, medicinal use of plants, etc.)
Knowledge of MFS service delivery, customs and traditions relating to child welfare is an asset.
