About the Role
As a key member of the camp team, the Camp Cook Supervisor is responsible for the overall planning, preparation, and service of nutritious, safe, and appealing meals for youth campers and staff. This role oversees kitchen operations, food safety compliance, menu planning, inventory control, and the supervision of kitchen staff. The Camp Cook Supervisor ensures that dietary needs are met while maintaining a clean, efficient, and positive kitchen environment aligned with camp values and schedules.
Responsibilities
Meal Planning & Nutrition
- Plan balanced, age-appropriate menus in accordance with camp schedules, budgets, and nutritional guidelines
- Accommodate dietary restrictions, allergies, cultural considerations, and medical requirements in coordination with camp leadership and program staff
- Ensure variety and quality in meals and snacks, including special meals for camp events or celebrations.
Food Preparation & Service
- Prepare and oversee the preparation of all meals and snacks in a timely and organized manner.
- Ensure food is cooked, held, and served at safe temperatures.
- Coordinate meal service times to align with daily camp programming.
- Maintain high standards of taste, presentation, and portion control.
Supervision & Leadership
- Supervise, train, and schedule kitchen and food service staff.
- Provide clear direction, performance feedback, and support to kitchen team members.
- Foster a respectful, inclusive, and teamwork-oriented kitchen environment.
- Address staff concerns or conflicts promptly and professionally.
Food Safety & Sanitation
- Ensure compliance with local health regulations, food safety standards, and camp policies.
- Enforce proper hygiene practices, including handwashing, cleaning schedules, and use of personal protective equipment as required.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe kitchen, storage areas, and dining facilities.
- Complete and maintain required food safety logs and documentation.
Inventory & Budget Management
- Order food, supplies, and equipment within established budgets.
- Monitor inventory levels, minimize waste, and ensure proper storage and rotation of food items.
- Track usage and report shortages, spoilage, or equipment needs to Director
Collaboration & Communication
- Communicate regularly with the Director & Program Manager regarding meal plans, dietary needs, and operational issues.
- Coordinate with Program Manager to support special events, field trips, or schedule changes.
- Respond professionally to feedback or concerns from campers and staff.
Health, Safety & Camp Culture
- Model positive behavior and professionalism consistent with camp values.
- Participate in camp meetings and trainings as required.
- Support emergency procedures related to food allergies, illness, or facility issues.
- Promote a welcoming dining experience that supports camper well-being and community
Qualifications & Skills
- Previous experience in food service management, commercial cooking, or institutional kitchens (camp, school, or healthcare preferred).
- Knowledge of food safety practices and sanitation standards; food safety certification preferred or required.
- Experience supervising and training staff.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, schedule-driven environment.
- Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
- Physical ability to stand for extended periods and lift kitchen supplies as required.
Background & Safeguarding Requirements
- This role involves regular interaction with children and youth in a camp environment.
- A clear criminal record check (including vulnerable sector screening, where applicable) is required prior to employment and must be maintained throughout the term of employment.
- Commitment to a safe, respectful, and youth-centered environment at all times.
- Ability to model appropriate boundaries, behavior, and professionalism when working around campers and youth staff.
- Compliance with all camp safeguarding, child protection, and reporting policies
Working Conditions
- Camp-based role requiring early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
- Physically demanding environment including heat, standing, and lifting.
- Seasonal living arrangements may be arranged depending on camp structure.
