CanNorth is seeking a highly motivated field Botanist / Environmental Monitor to work with our talented and innovative multidisciplinary team in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Responsibilities in this full-time position will include:

  • Conducting plant identification and inventory surveys, rare plant surveys, weed surveys, rangeland and riparian health assessments, and forest ecosite classification.
  • Conducting field work independently, as a crew member, or as a crew lead.
  • Environmental site evaluations, including identifying site characteristics such as habitat, dominant vegetation, presence of weedy/invasive species, topography, etc..
  • Classification of wetlands/riparian areas.
  • Environmental monitoring for a variety of projects including power, pipelines, and construction projects.
  • Assist with project planning as required (often from inception to execution of field work through to report preparation); this often requires experience conducting initial desktop environmental screenings.
  • Technical writing (to include composing smaller screening memos to larger reports) and research skills.
  • Assist with restoration and/or reclamation planning, including seed mix development.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, environmental science, or related natural sciences; however, a technical diploma may be acceptable if the applicant has previous experience relevant experience in a consulting environment or related industry.
  • Knowledge of government guidelines and protocols as well as provincial and federal regulations (in particular relating to species of conservation concern).
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills, be dedicated to high quality results, and use their creative thinking to find solutions to complex problems.
  • A team player, highly motivated and organized, able to work with a range of personalities, and have a positive attitude.
  • This position entails a substantial amount of field work; thus, applicants must be willing/able to be away for extended periods of time.
  • Field work will regularly require working in rugged terrain; strong outdoor skills, experience working in remote areas, and experience operating trucks with loaded trailers, ATVs, and snowmobiles is an asset.
  • Safety certifications such as First Aid, ATV, and /or UTV are considered a bonus.
