The Assistant Accountant is a key member of the accounting and finance team, responsible for delivering timely, accurate, financial analysis and support to the Accounting & Finance Manager. This role combines financial reporting, forecasting, project-level analysis, general accounting entries, reconciliations, accounts payable and accounts receivable support. Key requirements are strong accounting knowledge, experience in construction & heavy civil accounting, and excellent analytical and communication skills.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Accounting & Finance Manager the Assistant Accountant will be responsible for the following:

  • Assist in preparation of monthly financial statements.
  • Prepare monthly journal entries as required, maintaining and reconciling general ledger accounts.
  • Support in managing and processing Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable entries.
  • Analyze and monitor Project Costs with a focus on key financial KPIs including profitability by project, margins, overhead utilization, and cash flow – 5 KPIs for job costs (labour, material, trucking, Subcontractors & Equipment)
  • Support Operations on Work on Hand reports as required.
  • Calculate Work in Progress entries by Project to support Monthly financials.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to support financial decision-making

Mandatory Requirements:

  • Experience in Construction accounting principles
  • A minimum of three years of experience in accounting is required.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Problem-solving and decision-making
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines in a fast-paced construction environment.
