Role of a Board Director
Board Directors speak and act on behalf of our member-owners and are responsible for:

  • Monitoring performance of North Central Co-op
  • Applying and interpreting complex information to make sound, impartial decisions
  • Participating in strategic planning, reviewing goals, strategies, and budgets
  • Addressing membership matters professionally and courteously
  • Promoting transparency while maintaining confidentiality

Our team provides a range of products and services to support our member-owners. Through the work that we do, we help to build, fuel, feed and grow Western Canadian communities together.

There Are Four Board Director Positions Open For Nomination

  • Three, three-year term seats, and
  • One, one-year term seat

Qualifications
The skills and education that a potential Board Director has that can contribute to the success of North Central Co-op include but are not limited to:

  • An understanding and appreciation of Co-op values and the Co-op principles;
  • Interest in, and general knowledge of North Central Co-operative Association Ltd. lines of business;
  • Experience/education or expertise in accounting, business or financial management;
  • The ability to articulate views in discussions along with well-developed communication skills;
  • Demonstrated capacity in and commitment to work within a team;
  • Computer skills to organize, interpret, and present information.

Additionally, candidates must meet requirements under North Central Co-op's Bylaw 6.02, Policy GP-8.4.1, and the Alberta Co-operatives Act, including:

  • Be a member in good standing of North Central Co-op for at least one year (membership by January 31, 2025 for the 2026 election)
  • Be over 18 years of age and of sound mind
  • Reside within the Edmonton Census Metropolitan Area (plus Lac Ste. Anne and Yellowhead Counties)
  • Have purchased at least $3,500 in goods/services from North Central Co-op in the last fiscal year (exceptions considered for new residents)
  • Not be an employee or officer of North Central Co-op
  • Not be a spouse, partner, parent, child, or same-residence relative of an employee, officer, or director
  • Not be employed by a retail competitor
  • Not have been an employee of North Central Co-op within the last five years
  • Not be a sitting MP, MLA, or civic government member
  • Not be bankrupt or have declared bankruptcy in the past three years
  • Not have an account in arrears for more than 90 days

The time commitment required of our Board Directors involves committee meetings, quarterly Board meetings, availability to commit to learning requirements, and occasional travel for Co-operative Retailing System meetings and events.

Preferred Skills

  • Understanding of Co-op values and principles
  • Knowledge of North Central Co-op's lines of business
  • Expertise in accounting, business, or financial management
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to interpret and present information using technology
