Board Opportunity to Lead a National Moving Service For Survivors Fleeing Abuse 
Remote Volunteer Position 
Shelter Movers - Transit Secours is a national, volunteer-powered charitable organization providing moving and storage services at no cost to individuals and families fleeing abuse. We collaborate with local businesses and community agencies to support people, primarily women and children, as they transition to a life free of violence. We are looking for interested individuals to lend their time, talents and connections as part of Shelter Movers' national Board of Directors. The ideal candidate has prior board experience and can commit to evening board meetings (remote or in person) six times annually, along with 2-4 hours of committee work per week with occasional training and strategic planning sessions. Directors are expected to serve at least one two-year term.  As a member of the Board, a Director is responsible for the effective governance of the organization. The Board of Directors is collectively accountable to the organization's stakeholders, including volunteers, clients, community partners, institutional funders and donors. In addition, they are accountable for Shelter Movers' fiscal behaviour and legislative compliance. We are recruiting for positions with a priority on the following expertise:
  • Fund Development
  • Law
  • Human Resources
  • Finance/accounting
  • Gender-based violence sector
along with the following qualifications: 
  • Previous board experience 
  • Multilingualism and lived experience are considered strong assets. 
  • Demonstrated dedication to addressing gender-based violence 
  • Ability to contribute hours per month
  • A commitment to Shelter Movers' mission, vision, values and strategic direction 
Shelter Movers' mandate is national in scope, but local in application. We are currently looking for board representation from across Canada. 
Core responsibilities include:
  • Preparing for, attending and participating in approx. six annual board meetings, in person or remotely, as appropriate; 
  • Serving and actively participating on at least one committee; 
  • Providing guidance and strategic direction for the organization, prioritizing long-term stability and growth; 
  • Participating in regular reviews of Shelter Movers' mission, objective and core values, while also ensuring Shelter Movers embodies each; including making mission-driven Board-level decisions; 
  • Writing, reviewing and abiding by policies that apply to the Board and in some cases, the organization; 
  • Monitoring the organization's financial and operational performance, including budget setting, forecasting, regular review of results against plan, and overseeing major financial commitments including fundraising, capital expenditures and expansion plans; 
  • Ensuring the integrity of financial reporting and legal/regulatory/statutory compliance monitoring;
  • Contributing to performance evaluations and management of the CEO; 
  • Participating in the recruitment of board members and the nominations process as appropriate; 
  • Representing Shelter Movers at events, including a willingness to reach out to your network or provide contacts to fundraising staff. Board members are expected to make a financial commitment to the organization. There is no minimum donation; 
  • Maintaining engagement in relevant community issues and news impactful to the organization and sector; and, 
  • At all times being an ambassador for Shelter Movers' work and mission, supporting the CEO and staff as appropriate, and keeping confidential all matters discussed at Board meetings. 
Directors are elected by the membership at the Annual General Meeting (typically October of each year).

Shelter Movers - Transit Secours est un organisme caritatif national, appuyé principalement par des bénévoles, qui offre des services de déménagement et d'entreposage gratuits aux personnes et aux familles fuyant un contexte de violence. Nous collaborons avec des entreprises et des organismes communautaires locaux pour accompagner les personnes, principalement les femmes et les enfants, dans leur transition vers une vie sans violence. 
Nous recherchons des personnes intéressées pour mettre leur temps, leurs talents et leurs relations au service du conseil d'administration national de Shelter Movers - Transit Secours. Le candidat.e idéal.e possède une expérience préalable au sein d'un conseil d'administration et peut s'engager à participer à des réunions du conseil en soirée (à distance ou en personne) six fois par an, ainsi qu'à 2 à 4 heures de travail en comité par semaine, avec des séances de formation et de planification stratégique occasionnelles. Les administrateurs sont censés exercer un mandat d'au moins deux ans.
En tant que membre du conseil d'administration, un administrateur est responsable de la gouvernance efficace de l'organisation. Le conseil d'administration est collectivement responsable devant les parties prenantes de l'organisation, notamment les bénévoles, les clients, les partenaires communautaires, les bailleurs de fonds institutionnels et les donateurs. De plus, il/elle est responsable de la gestion financière et de la conformité législative de Shelter Movers - Transit Secours. Nous recrutons pour des postes axés sur les expertises suivantes :

Le mandat de Shelter Movers - Transit Secours a une portée nationale, mais une portée locale. Nous recherchons actuellement des représentants au sein de conseils d'administration de partout au Canada. Les principales responsabilités comprennent :
  • Préparer, assister et participer à environ six réunions annuelles du conseil d'administration, en personne ou à distance, selon le cas ;
  • Siéger et participer activement à au moins un comité ;
  • Fournir des conseils et une orientation stratégique à l'organisation, en privilégiant la stabilité et la croissance à long terme ;
  • Participer aux revues régulières de la mission, des objectifs et des valeurs fondamentales de Shelter Movers, tout en s'assurant que Shelter Movers les incarne, y compris la prise de décisions au niveau du conseil d'administration axées sur la mission ;
  • Rédiger, réviser et respecter les politiques applicables au conseil d'administration et, dans certains cas, à l'organisation ;
  • Suivre la performance financière et opérationnelle de l'organisation, y compris l'établissement du budget, les prévisions, l'analyse régulière des résultats par rapport au plan, et superviser les engagements financiers majeurs, notamment la collecte de fonds, les dépenses d'investissement et les plans d'expansion ;
  • Assurer l'intégrité des rapports financiers et le suivi de la conformité légale, réglementaire et statutaire ;
  • Contribuer aux évaluations de performance et à la gestion du PDG ;
  • Participer au recrutement des membres du conseil d'administration et au processus de nomination, le cas échéant ;
  • Représenter Shelter Movers - Transit Secours lors d'événements, notamment en étant disposé à contacter votre réseau ou à fournir des contacts à l'équipe de collecte de fonds. Les membres du conseil d'administration sont tenus de s'engager financièrement auprès de l'organisation. Il n'y a pas de don minimum ;
  • Maintenir l'engagement sur les enjeux communautaires pertinents et les actualités ayant un impact sur l'organisation et le secteur ; et
  • Être un ambassadeur permanent du travail et de la mission de Shelter Movers - Transit Secours, soutenir le PDG et le personnel, le cas échéant, et préserver la confidentialité des sujets abordés lors des réunions du conseil d'administration.
