The purpose of this position is to provide a safe and appropriate supervision and monitoring of parenting time between parents and their children and facilitating the safe and appropriate exchange of children between parents in the Supervised Parenting Time and Exchange Program.
Duties will include but are not limited to:
- Oversee and observe parenting time in the SPTEP by directing parents and children to parenting time;
- Observe interaction between the parent and the children and document, in accordance with best practice guidelines, the parenting interaction between the child and the parent;
- Evaluate and observe all parent-child interactions for safety and appropriateness and intervene as required should safety concerns arise;
- Effectively communicate with family members, the SPTEP Coordinator, Clinicians, Lawyers;
- Prepare notes on observation of parents and children in the program – which include an assessment of parental and child variables, concerns to be investigated by the Office of the Children's Lawyer, and any other pertinent information regarding the observation of the arranged parenting time - these notes are filed with the court and provide documentation of the areas of observation;
- Ensure notes meet best practice guidelines of the SPTEP and ensure that the Court is informed of how the parenting time and exchanges are working for the family;
- Responsible for ensuring the safety of the child during the visits and the Observer may be required to intervene in the event the parent is not sufficiently doing so or if matters escalate;
- Worker may be called to testify at family law proceedings where matters arising out of a parenting time or exchange;
- Other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Completion of a recognized post-secondary degree in a related area (e.g. Psychology, Child and Youth Studies, Family Studies, Education) or a diploma from a recognized college in Youth Worker Program, Early Childhood Education, Human Services or related area of study;
- Considerable Experience working directly with children and youth with learning and/or behavioral issues;
- Demonstrated equivalencies will be considered.
- Knowledge of child development, addiction and mental health issues and crisis intervention;
- Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills as well as time management and organizational skills;
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team;
- CPR, First Aid Certificate and Non‑Violent Crisis Intervention training is required;
- A valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle with proof of valid insurance;
- Knowledge of community resources available to children and families;
- Conflict resolution and problem-solving skills, as well as leadership and resourcefulness;
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries with clients;
- Ability to prioritize and work independently;
- Adherence to confidentiality;
- Ability to provide a satisfactory criminal record check and vulnerable sector prior to employment. May also be required to obtain an Enhances Security Clearance (renewable).
Other Qualifications:
- Bilingualism in different languages and English is an asset (ie, Mandarin, Arabic, Hindi, French, etc)
