Materials Estimator
Napier-Reid has a current opening for a Materials Estimator to create a final bill of material for the projects and prepare estimates via quantity take-offs. This role involves a high level of multitasking to prepare detailed quantity estimates, read and understand drawings, and project scopes. The ideal candidate enjoys working as a team player in an office environment, has a technical aptitude and understanding of the manufacturing process.
Reporting to the Director of Engineering, the candidate will work with other team members in the delivery of work related to mechanical/civil wastewater projects. Responsible for working on, and completing, estimates for tendered & negotiated projects and providing product materials support to our procurement team. This role involves a high level of multitasking to prepare detailed estimates for a wide variety of construction projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze product requirements, specifications and drawings to determine the materials, components and sub-assemblies required to be included in a Bill of Materials (BOM).
- Review and understand project drawings and technical specifications with a solid understanding of trade specific scopes of work.
- Review project plans and specifications and comment on potential alternate materials and/or cost savings.
- Assist with preparation of technical documents required for approvals, produce material quantity take offs, and assist with construction cost estimates.
- Produce detailed and accurate BOMs based on specific project requirements, material specifications, and detailed drawings, using software tools or spreadsheets.
- Create, review, and evaluate BOMs for accuracy, completeness and compliance with product specifications and budget constraints.
- Review and interpret internally produced shop drawings to produce final quantity takeoffs for detailed BOM generation.
- Develop, administer, and maintain system to accurately translate shop drawing/submittal information and BOMs to ERP system inputs.
Other duties may include:
- Provide technical support and material specifications for projects.
- Issue requests and receive quotations for specialty items required for projects.
- Liaison between the engineering department and the procurement department
- Provide technical support and assist Project Engineers and Project Managers as required.
- Assist the bid team and applications team in obtaining information and/or quotations for specialty items as required.
Qualifications
- Diploma in Mechanical / Civil Engineering, CET, P.Eng. or other applicable degree, diploma or designation
- Experience in the following activities not required, but considered an asset:
· Work experience with wastewater equipment, and/or process equipment
· Municipal civil construction or mechanical estimating experience
· Work experience in a general contracting or construction environment

- Capable of working in a fast-paced environment on a wide variety of projects.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, research, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft-based platforms including Excel and Word.
- Knowledge of estimating programs, AutoCAD/SolidWorks, Epicor, or other ERP systems is considered an asset.
