Job Summary

Reporting to the Executive Lead, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI), the Program Advisor will support the advancement of Halton Region's internal EDI strategy. This includes the development and implementation of EDI initiatives, consulting with and advising departments on EDI best practices and the creation and maintenance of tools, resources and learning opportunities.

This position supports all employees across Halton Region, not only those within the Social & Community Services department, to ensure that equity, diversity, and inclusion are embedded throughout the organization.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Consult and collaborate across the organization to embed equity and inclusion in the execution of Halton's strategic objectives.
  • Assist and support program areas to interpret the implications of EDI, and incorporate EDI best practices into service delivery.
  • Support the implementation of new projects and initiatives related to equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Conduct research and incorporate findings and recommendations into new initiatives or programs.
  • Facilitate or lead awareness sessions, trainings and/or focus groups.
  • Source or develop educational tools and resources.
  • Develop and utilize metrics to measure progress of EDI initiatives.
Skills & Qualifications
  • Lived experience as a member of one or more equity-deserving groups, including, Indigenous, Black, or other racialized people, persons with disabilities, members of the 2SLGBTQ+ communities and women.
  • A degree or diploma in Equity, Diversity & Inclusion, Human Rights, Gender and/or Women's Studies, Sociology, Social Justice, Disability Justice or a related field from a recognized post-secondary institution; a combination of education and related professional and community experience will be considered.
  • Completion of EDI-related training or certification, or equivalent experience demonstrating a commitment to continuous learning in equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Five (5) to eight (8) years of experience in equity, diversity, and inclusion work, including program development and leading or supporting change management initiatives.
  • Demonstrate an expert knowledge of equity, diversity and inclusion and human rights, including knowledge of various forms of oppression (i.e. ableism, classism, colonialism, homophobia, Islamophobia, racism, sexism, transphobia, etc.).
  • Exceptional consulting and advisory skills, with high political acuity and sound judgment.
  • Advanced critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships, influence affected parties, and navigate organizational dynamics.
  • Excellent written communication and research skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly and effectively.

  • Effective interpersonal and verbal communication skills that foster collaboration and engagement across diverse teams.
  • Skilled in delivering content clearly and confidently to diverse audiences with proven success in facilitating group interaction and participation.
  • Skilled at navigating challenging conversations, managing conflicts or resistance, and building consensus while maintaining professionalism and positive relationships.
  • Self-starter with proven ability to work independently, prioritize competing demands, and manage multiple complex projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient in M365 tools, including Word, Excel and Teams.
