Reporting to the Director, Wellness (Director), the Manager, Workplace Health and Safety (Manager) will lead the development, execution and institutionalization of the Government of Nunavut's (GN) Health and Safety functions, goals, programs, initiatives, policies and training. Mandate includes Health and Safety support for Government departments. The Manager ensures GN compliance with health and safety legislation, policies, collective agreements, labour arbitration cases, relevant precedents, while integrating Inuit Societal Values. The position impacts all GN work locations and employees by establishing standards, policies, practices, and by designing, delivering, communicating, monitoring and enforcing all components of the health and safety mandate.
ResponsibilitiesMajor responsibilities for the Manager, Workplace Health and Safety include:
- Provide leadership and expertise in GN wide workplace health and safety programs and initiatives.
- Ensure GN compliance with legislation, policies, collective agreements and precedent setting arbitration cases.
- Design and implement health and safety training programs for managers, supervisors and employees involved in hazardous functions.
- Act as the key point of contact and liaison between the GN and regulatory bodies, including WSCC, unions and external stakeholders.
- Assign work, manage and adjust responsibilities and workloads to align with divisional workplans, mandates and accountabilities.
- Identify and evaluate health and safety risks; conduct audits and develop strategies to eliminate or minimize risks.
- Develop, launch, and lead occupational health and safety programs across all GN departments, boards, and agencies.
The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through an undergraduate degree in Occupational Health & Safety, social sciences or equivalent from a recognized academic institution, plus three (3) years OHS experience at operational and strategic levels including one (1) year of supervisory experience. Current certification with the Canadian Board of Registered Safety Professionals (CRSP) and experience in preparing OHS risk assessments is a requirement. Certification in Emergency Planning, Emergency Management or Emergency Preparedness is considered an asset.
The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut's official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
