The Durham District School Board acknowledges that many Indigenous Nations have longstanding relationships, both historic and modern, with the territories upon which our school board and schools are located. Today, this area is home to many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island. We acknowledge that the Durham Region forms a part of the traditional and treaty territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation, the Mississauga Peoples and the treaty territory of the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation. It is on these ancestral and treaty lands that we teach, live and learn.

Under the direction of the Area Custodial Supervisor and supervision of the Lead Custodian or Group Leader, assists in maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary school building and grounds by cleaning assigned areas, operating HVAC and energy systems, performing minor maintenance, organizing the equipment room, and completing seasonal and periodic tasks as needed
Key Responsibilities
Clean Assigned Areas
- washrooms, showers and change room areas - clean with disinfectants toilets, urinals, basins, fixtures, wall partitions, floors (floors wet mopped);replenish paper products, liquid soap and other sanitary products
- halls and stairs - sweep/dust mop all floors and spot wet mop the floor as required and as scheduled; wash/damp mop all floors as required and as scheduled
- classrooms - tidy area, move and replace chairs, desks and tables; sweep/dust mop floors, vacuum carpets, dust all ledges, clean with disinfectant desk tops (weekly and as required), spot clean walls, door frames and other fixtures, clean blackboards and ledges (weekly)
- floor maintenance - strip floors using chemicals and buffer; rinse, wash and seal, wax and buff
- other - dust blinds and wash windows periodically, tidy, dust, wipe and spot clean areas and fixtures as required
- empty and dispose of all garbage
- when finished set computerized heating controls for minimum energy use, turn lights out and lock windows and doors, test and set alarm
- equipment room - clean mops, sinks, pails and other fixtures and equipment used; clean equipment room; store equipment, cleaning solvents and other chemicals properly
Monitor and Adjust the Controls for the Building Equipment for Heating, Cooling, Ventilation and Energy Conservation
- ensure that the heating, ventilation/cooling and related equipment are adjusted to accommodate evening use and conservation of energy as required
Perform Minor Maintenance As Required
- replace all light bulbs
- minor repairs - on desks, chairs, tables, door hinges, lockers, electrical cords and other fixtures; on plumbing fixtures
- machinery - disassemble and clean exhaust fans in portables and other areas; clean air filters; grease motors in ventilation equipment; drain air compressors
- assemble - shelving units
Perform Season and Periodic Duties
- summer - complete clean of all desks and furniture; complete strip, clean and refinish of all floor surfaces; vacuum and shampoo all carpets; wash window blinds, windows and walls, etc.
- winter, clear/shovel and salt parking areas, walks and entrance ways
- yard work - cut grass, weed and maintain flower beds, trim trees and shrubs, collect litter from grounds
- supplies and furniture - assist in unloading trucks, deliver to appropriate school location, set up and arrange if necessary
- special events - set up and remove chairs and tables as required
Assist Lead Custodian/Group Leader, the Principal, the Teaching Staff and After Hour Users of the School Facility as requested and as required
- advise supervisor of areas of the building that require attention (e.g. leaking taps, lifting tiles, equipment problems, etc.)
- assist with unexpected or emergency situations (cleaning, hazards and minor repair situations)
- monitor after hours users of the school facility
- present at all times a positive image and response to the public
- receive and respond to enquiries courteously, in supplying information and in directing callers or visitors to the appropriate person or location
Perform such other Duties as may be Assigned by the Supervisor
Equipment Used
Floor cleaning equipment including vacuum cleaners, wet and dry mops, small brush, floor bucket, scrubbers, buffers and polishing machines, hand tools (saw, hammer, drill), power tools, snow blower, lawn mower, rake, computer/printer.
Qualifications
- Grade 12 diploma
- 6-12 months training/experience
Additional Information
- This posting is for the creation of a candidate pool to fill current and future vacancies. If there are not immediate vacancies, successful applicants will be placed in a pool for future opportunities.
- This is a 40 hour per week permanent Coverage Custodian position.
- This is an afternoon shift working from approximately 2:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Monday to Friday during the school year, however during holiday periods and summer clean-up dayshifts are required.
- The exact distribution of custodial job duties will vary with the size of the school. In larger schools the cleaning of washrooms, the dusting and the spot cleaning tasks are normally done by a cleaner. In these schools the night custodian may have some supervision responsibilities with respect to the cleaners. In the smaller schools where cleaners are not part of the custodial staff, the cleaner's job duties will be performed by the custodian.
- Provide a current Criminal Background Check with vulnerable sector screening upon hire.
