Major Responsibilities:

  • Performs skilled tasks in installation, maintenance and repair of both interior and exterior wiring systems, transformers, switching equipment, relays, motors and other electrical and electronic systems, and equipment, of a commercial and industrial nature, for City facilities such as PLC-controlled MCC systems landfill flare systems, calibrates landfill gas detectors.
  • Lays out, assembles, installs, repairs, maintains, connects and tests electrical/electronic systems/equipment, including EMT and rigid conduit installation, underground electrical wiring, surface-mounted and/or overhead wiring, splicing, joining and connecting wires, and electrical control panel wiring for various maintenance and construction projects.
  • Prepares plans, sketches and specifications, reads and interprets blueprints, maps, drawings, uses a computerized system (i.e. CMMS) to complete work orders, reports, and logging data electronically, maintains accurate records requisitions and picks up materials, completes written reports, etc.
  • May oversee the work of contractors and provide work direction and training to other staff
  • Utilizes a variety of tools/equipment and is responsible for their maintenance
  • Provides, updates and maintains the required documentation of all work area mechanical maintenance activities
  • Performs a variety of skilled work not requiring the services of other licensed trades
  • Travels to various work locations in a service vehicle and may operate equipment such as forklifts, scissor lifts, articulating boom lifts, and overhead hoisting devices

Key Qualifications:

Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

  • Must possess and be able to maintain a current Certificate of Qualification as an Industrial Electrician 442A or as a Construction and Maintenance Electrician (Branch 1) 309A in accordance with the regulations enforced in the Province of Ontario.

  • Must obtain within 90 days a TSSA approved Landfill Gas Electricians (IMT-E) license, and be able to maintain the same, as determined by work location.

  • Considerable experience in a wide variety of commercial and industrial electrical work as it applies to power distribution and controls for facilities and process equipment such as overhead cranes, lighting, fire protection systems, HVAC, conveyors, pumps, fans, gas detection systems etc.

  • Must possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario, Class "G" and must qualify for the City's equipment operating permits and requirements.

You must also have:

  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of electricity including polyphase circuits and good working knowledge of 110 to 27,600-volt equipment and circuits.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair complex systems.
  • Ability to provide work direction and training to others.
  • Ability to work at heights including on scaffolding and mobile aerial equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret sketches and drawings.
  • Must have computer skills or agree to be trained and be able to apply the needed skills.
  • Must possess knowledge of computers including operation of various software programs, ability to make necessary calculations and interpret data
  • Strong interpersonal skills such as coaching, initiative, conflict resolution, problem-solving, teamwork effectiveness and an ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and interest in continuous learning and improvement.
  • Must be familiar with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the regulations that apply to this work.
  • With the appropriate safety precautions, must be able to tolerate heights, dusty, noisy, and odorous conditions and be able to work in all weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work in a confined space and have knowledge of entry regulations.
  • Must be available to work shift/weekend/overtime/on call duty.
  • Must be able to report directly to jobsites in the City of Toronto, Durham and York Regions.
