General Responsibilities

As a Communications Specialist, you will:

  • Answer 9-1-1 and other emergency and non-emergency telephone lines located in Wheatland Regional 9-1-1 Centre.
  • Respond promptly to emergency calls.
  • Notify the appropriate department of emergencies in a timely manner.
  • Gather and relay necessary information per EFD or other protocol, ensuring responding agencies receive accurate details.
  • Assist callers by providing protocol-based support when required.
  • Coordinate resources for Fire Departments by contacting other agencies when needed.
  • Conduct nightly pager tests for Fire Departments as per SOP or by request.
  • Liaise with the Director of Operations or Operations Manager for situations requiring management decisions beyond standard dispatch duties.
  • Manage individual portfolios and assignments as determined by management.
  • Take initiative in professional development and growth within available resources.

Qualifications

  • Current certification with the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch.
  • Ability to speak, read and write English fluently.
  • Ability to communicate information quickly and accurately.
  • Possess good listening skills.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize information and events.
  • Ability to complete multiple tasks effectively during stressful events.
  • Ability to make appropriate and timely decisions in emergency situations.
  • Typing and basic computer skills.
  • The Emergency Fire Dispatcher (EFD) certification is required for this role; however, candidates who do not currently hold this certification may complete the course upon hiring.

Work Schedule & Compensation

Dispatch shift rotation

  • Annual work hours: 2,190 per year (full-time employment).
  • Shift pattern: Two ten-hour day shifts, followed by two fourteen-hour night shifts, then four days off.

Overtime pay: Two times the employee's base hourly rate for all overtime hours worked.

Weekend premium: $3.25 per hour for shifts between Friday 20:00 and Monday 08:00.

Night shift premium: $5.00 per hour for shifts between 20:00 and 08:00.

Vacation Entitlements

  • During the first year of continuous full-time employment, an employee shall earn 144 hours of vacation.
  • During each of the second to ninth years of continuous full-time employment, an employee shall earn 192 hours of vacation.
  • During each of the tenth to nineteenth years of continuous full-time employment, an employee shall earn 240 hours of vacation.
