Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager of Design, Production and Operations, the Graphic Designer is part of a multidisciplinary creative team that develops visual solutions to communicate key messages to targeted audiences. The role involves conceptualizing, designing, and producing a variety of graphic materials that support marketing and communications initiatives, educational programs, and wayfinding systems. These materials help advance the Royal Alberta Museum's mandate as Alberta's provincial museum. We sustain the Province's collecting, research, and conservation activities and we showcase and share a long and storied history of this land and the Peoples who have made it their home.

The Graphic Designer applies industry-standard software, typography, and design practices, along with strong conceptual and creative skills. The Graphic Designer collaborates closely with fellow designers and graphic production technicians to develop design products that align with communications and marketing needs. The role includes consulting with Marketing & Communication colleagues and other team members to define project parameters, offering informed advice on visual communication and production methods, and contributing to continuous improvement while fostering a culture of excellence and accountability.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define 2D design problems, determine design objectives and conceptualize effective design solutions.
  • Create and present design concepts to stakeholders for feedback and integrate input to create a final version for implementation.
  • Create production-ready or use-ready artwork that meets defined communications objectives, aligns with project scope, and captivates, informs and inspires the target audience.
  • Review draft designs with various stakeholders and incorporate feedback to ensure a holistic design approach that considers communication strategies, wayfinding, learning programs, audio/visual and technical systems, and other relevant factors.
  • Produce, procure and/or install graphic products.
  • Coordinate graphics production and procure necessary goods and services, including obtaining quotations, securing design and budget approvals, preparing schedules, assisting with development of purchase requisitions and contracts, managing contracts and quality control.
  • Contribute to development and achievement of Visitor Experience Unit plans and priorities.
  • Participate in team meetings and other committees or project teams as assigned to represent graphic design perspectives.

Qualifications

University graduation in a related field (i.e. Arts, Visual Communications, Graphic Design) plus three years related experience; or equivalent as described below.

Equivalency:

Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience.
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Related Experience:

  • Experience in graphic design, ideally in the museum sector or in a cultural institution, due to the unique specialization of this position.

Technical Competencies, certification and/or training:

  • Advanced proficiency with Mac computer platform and design software packages (including Adobe Creative Suite) and the Microsoft 365 office applications.
  • Knowledge of materials and processes used in print media, exhibit graphics, digital media and indoor/outdoor signage.
  • Demonstrated content analysis and problem-solving skills to integrate diverse exhibition 2D graphic products into a consistent whole.
  • Knowledge of museum visitor studies and informal learning theory as applied to exhibition development.
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of visual communications as it relates to print media, digital media, environmental graphics, advertising, interpretive displays and indoor/outdoor signage.
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of accessibility standards.
  • Effective project management skills, and ability to manage own work independently.
  • Class 5 driver's license

Assets:

  • Experience in the development and delivery of innovative interpretive methods in museum exhibits, including but not limited to passive, active, immerse and interactive experiences.
  • Ability to interpret architectural drawings.
  • 3D design skills and experience.
  • Motion graphics skills.
  • Illustration and photography.
  • Laying out graphic products in French

There is (1) permanent, Part-time position working between 14.5 and 21.75 hours per week, averaging 36.5 hours per pay period.
