We are seeking a
Transmission Line Design Engineer
to join our engineering team. Reporting to the Engineering Lead, Transmission you will play a key role in designing and safeguarding the infrastructure that powers Nova Scotia's energy future.
Your work will help Nova Scotia Power achieve its ambitious goal of 80% renewable energy by 2030, supporting major grid modernization efforts and landmark projects such as the Wasoqonatl new 345kV interprovincial transmission line and large-scale wind interconnection builds.
As part of the team, you'll take on the Maritime Transmission Challenge, tackling:
- Extreme ice loading - advanced modeling and de-icing strategies
- Salt spray corrosion - innovative coatings, materials, and mitigation techniques
- Hurricane and nor'easter resilience - Category 2+ wind and surge design
- Dense forest corridors - complex vegetation management solutions
- Challenging geology - from bedrock blasting to peatland foundations
This role offers the opportunity to combine technical excellence with real-world impact and building infrastructure that will define how Nova Scotia is powered for decades to come.
Key Elements Of This Role Include
Support Complex Projects
- Assist in engineering overhead lines from 69kV-345kV for reliability and renewable integration
- Perform structural analysis using PLS-CADD and PLS-POLE
- Prepare design packages and technical reports under the guidance of senior engineers
- Contribute to solutions for maritime environments
Apply Technical Standards
- Develop drawings, specifications, and calculations for review
- Ensure compliance with CSA C22.3, IEEE, and NESC standards
- Support QA/QC processes and consultant coordination
Build the Future Grid
- Support smart grid and battery storage integration
- Design infrastructure for offshore wind and interprovincial connections
- Contribute to the Atlantic Loop planning corridor
- Embed cybersecurity in modern line design
Collaborate and Learn
- Work closely with Senior engineers and project managers
- Engage with cross-functional teams in engineering, construction and environmental groups
- Participate in technical discussion and knowledge sharing sessions.
These Skills Will Make You Successful
To thrive in this role, you recognize yourself in most of the following competencies and skills listed below:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, or Structural Engineering (CEAB-accredited)
- You are a professional member of Engineers Nova Scotia or are eligible and committed to obtaining membership within twelve months of starting the position.
You have 1-4 years of experience in transmission line design or comparable engineering design.

Experience contributing to multi-million-dollar infrastructure projects
- Self-starter with strong initiative and ability to work independently
- Positive attitude toward learning new tools, technologies, and processes
- Strong problem-solving skills and adaptability in a dynamic project environment
- Effective communication and collaboration skills within multidisciplinary teams
- Strong technical writing and stakeholder presentation skills
- Demonstrated mentoring and team leadership
- Ability to work across engineering, construction, and environmental groups
- Direct coastal or maritime utility experience is an asset
- Exposure to grid modernization, smart grid, or energy storage projects is an asset
- Active involvement in professional societies and published technical work is an asset
Technical Competencies
- Exposure to GIS, LiDAR, and 3D modeling platforms
- Familiarity with software tools such as PLS CADD, SAPS, TOWER, or RISA
- PLS-TOWER proficiency for lattice design is an asset
- Knowledge of CSA C22.3, IEEE, and NESC standards
- Knowledge of environmental permitting and stakeholder consultation
- Understanding of renewable energy interconnection requirements
- Strong technical background and interest in academics and experience
