This position is eligible for a hybrid work model. When attending an event or meeting in person, your primary office location will be based out of City Hall, 426 Brant Street Work location is subject to change at the discretion of the City due to operational demands. Effective 2026 this role will be required to be on site 50% of the time each month.

Position Overview

This position is responsible for receiving, responding to, and redirecting public and applicant inquiries to the appropriate subject matter experts; guiding applicants through the Pre-Building Permit, Zoning Clearance Certificate, and Residential Swimming Pool application processes; and setting up application files for the Planning Implementation team. The role plays an integral part in supporting the Community Planning Department's commitment to delivering an exceptional customer experience.

Responsibilities

The Planning Technologist is responsible for:

  • Serving as the primary point of contact for customer experience matters related to the Community Planning Department.
  • Responding to public inquiries received by phone, email, and in person, using planning knowledge and technical expertise to provide information, including updates on application status.
  • Triaging and redirecting complex public and applicant inquiries to subject matter experts and senior staff when appropriate.
  • Engaging and providing advice to the public, the development industry, the business community and internal departments on general zoning matters, Pre-Building Permit applications, Zoning Clearance Certificates, Residential Swimming Pool applications, and Committee of Adjustment.
  • Reviewing and interpreting technical documents such as development plans, site plans, architectural drawings, and grading plans to ensure completeness of low-density residential development application submissions.
  • Coordinating the intake and processing of Committee of Adjustment, Pre-Building Permit, and Residential Swimming Pool applications, issuing approvals in accordance with established checklists and procedures.
  • Acting as liaison between applicants and internal departments (Planning, Building, Forestry, and Site Engineering), serving as the single point of contact throughout the processing of Pre-Building Permit and Residential Swimming Pool applications.
  • Creating and maintaining development application folders in AMANDA for the Planning Implementation team.
  • Assisting Coordinator with research and/or special projects as needed.
  • Providing backup support to Committee of Adjustment staff as needed.
  • Confirming receipt of fees and securities related to Planning Implementation team development applications.
  • Implementing business process improvements, including the development of FAQs and communication materials to reflect changes in departmental procedures and legislative requirements.

Requirements

You possess a post-secondary degree or diploma in Architecture, Engineering, Planning, or a related field, along with a minimum of one (1) year of experience reading and interpreting development, site, and grading plans. Working knowledge of planning, zoning, grading and drainage principles for low density residential development is required.

Success in this role requires excellent communication and customer service skills, strong time management abilities, and the capacity to take initiative while remaining flexible and adaptable in a dynamic work environment.
