George Bell Arena is a community-focused Board of Management Arena serving residents, minor sports organizations, schools, and user groups in Toronto's west end. The arena operates in partnership with the City of Toronto and is committed to providing safe, high-quality ice and facility operations for all users. George Bell Arena is undergoing extensive renovations to become a leading facility in the City of Toronto.

Position Summary

The Board of Management Arena is seeking a skilled and motivated Lead Rink Operator to oversee day-to-day ice operations and facility maintenance at a community arena within the City of Toronto. The successful candidate will provide hands-on leadership to rink operations staff, ensure high-quality ice conditions, and maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for all users

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate daily arena and ice operations, including ice resurfacing, edging, flooding, and ice maintenance
  • Supervise, train, and support rink operators and casual staff during assigned shifts
  • Ensure compliance with all City of Toronto policies, Board of Management procedures, and health and safety regulations
  • Monitor and maintain arena equipment, including ice resurfacer, refrigeration plant, boilers, and related mechanical systems
  • Perform routine inspections of the facility and address maintenance or safety concerns promptly
  • Maintain accurate operational logs, including ice maintenance, temperature readings, and incident reports
  • Assist with scheduling and operational support for ice rentals, public skating, and special events
  • Respond to customer inquiries and concerns in a professional and courteous manner
  • Act as the senior on-site staff member during assigned shifts and respond to emergencies as required

Qualifications & Skills

  • Minimum of 5–10 years of arena or ice rink operations experience, including ice resurfacing
  • Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience in a recreation or facilities environment
  • Valid Ice Resurfacer Operator certification (or ability to obtain upon hire)
  • Knowledge of refrigeration systems, arena mechanical operations, and ice quality management
  • Strong understanding of occupational health and safety requirements
  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and prioritize tasks in a dynamic environment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting, bending, and working in cold environments
  • Availability to work flexible shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant certification in refrigeration (e.g., ORFA, R-ES), building maintenance, or a related technical trade
  • First Aid and CPR certification
  • Experience working in a City of Toronto or Board of Management arena environment

Working Conditions

  • Indoor arena environment with exposure to cold temperatures
  • Shift work including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays
  • Supervise, schedule, and train junior Rink Operators on proper equipment use, safety procedures, and ice maintenance techniques
  • Maintain detailed records of ice maintenance, equipment logs, and operational activities
  • Ensure strict adherence to all Arena safety policies, including lockout/tagout (LOTO) and personal protective equipment (PPE) guidelines
  • Physically demanding role requiring standing, walking, and operating machinery

Team Leadership & Safety

  • Supervise, schedule, and train junior Rink Operators on proper equipment use, safety procedures, and ice maintenance techniques
  • Maintain detailed records of ice maintenance, equipment logs, and operational activities
  • Ensure strict adherence to all Arena safety policies, including lockout/tagout (LOTO) and personal protective equipment (PPE) guidelines
