We are seeking a pragmatic and strategic
Legal Counsel
to join the ENMAX in-house Legal Team. This person would be responsible for varied and complex legal work, requiring familiarity with a broad field of legal knowledge, or in-depth knowledge in a particular area of expertise.
This position offers the opportunity to do high caliber legal work as a member of a high performing, collaborative and collegial legal team. The ideal candidate is a keen learner, problem-solver and relationship builder who will effectively partner with the business and within the Legal Team to deliver strategic and commercially relevant legal advice on a wide variety corporate and commercial matters.
Major Responsibilities
- Cultivate an understanding of the strategy and goals of the ENMAX business operations to provide quality legal advice, identify legal risks, and advise on legal obligations and steps to protect ENMAX's interests
- Develop timely and practical legal solutions for assigned client groups that align with strategic goals
- Negotiate and draft contracts
- Develop relationships within the Legal Team and across the organization to ensure the effective delivery of legal support and advice to the business
- Work collaboratively and strategically with external counsel, as needed
- Under the direction of the Legal Counsel's leader, assist with ongoing precedent development and implement other departmental strategic initiatives, lead and/or facilitate Legal Team goals and make recommendations to improve business processes
- Keep current on legal developments and best practices in relevant areas, and update the business as required
- Provide legal advice and services to assigned client groups in an effective and efficient manner
- Contribute to a culture focused on teamwork, pragmatic solutions, and continuous learning and development
- Develop strong business acumen and commercial mindset
- Advise, inform and assist leader(s) of Legal Services by sharing relevant information, supporting key relationships and escalating appropriate matters for discussion
Education Required
- Law degree (LL.B. or J.D.) from an accredited law school
- Practicing member in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta
Qualifications & Experience
- 6+ years' post-call experience at a top-level firm or in-house
- Demonstrated experience as a solicitor in corporate or commercial related matters
- Exceptional technical legal skills with excellent drafting, written and oral communication skills
- Demonstrated experience with contract negotiation
- Ability to manage diverse client groups and stakeholders, and multiple files and projects concurrently
Specialty in one or more areas of law relevant to ENMAX clients, such as (but not limited to):
Corporate commercial/contract law
- Energy law
- IT law
- Construction, engineering and procurement law

Location:
This role will be part of our hybrid (home and office) workforce with office workspace located at ENMAX Place th Avenue SE, Calgary, AB). You will work from home on Mondays and Fridays and in the office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
