The Role

Coordinates the implementation of transit system technology projects related to the maintenance, update/expansion, or replacement of transit systems (e.g., transit scheduling, operations, passenger information, fares).

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Assists management with the development and implementation of transit system technology projects. Develops project/work plans, installation designs, work schedules/timelines, stakeholders/project team members, and resource requirements. Creates and maintains comprehensive project documentation, plans, and reports.
  • Facilitates and supports project teams to identify and implement project tasks and activities. Provides technical, research, and troubleshooting support to ensure system functionality, integration, and quality control testing. Liaises with corporate ITS, vendors, and contractors to resolve software limitations, defects, and time and resource constraints.
  • Identifies and defines project planning and implementation issues, needs, resources, and opportunities. Works collaboratively with other staff and stakeholders to collect, document, and maintain research/information, identify gaps, and reconcile variances in meeting requirements.
  • Monitors and tracks project progress, including budget and project artifact documents. Provides information and status updates on project components, standards, processes, and expectations to management, staff, and other stakeholders. Participates in ideation processes, writing project charters, minutes, and related tasks. Escalates issues to management as needed.
  • Chairs project meetings and working committees as part of larger projects.
  • Maintains project files/documentation and creates training guides and resources used by systems team(s).
  • Coordinates installation and maintenance of application software, IT infrastructure, and voice and data communications with staff, vendors, ITS, and contractors.
  • Assists to administer contracts with vendors, and monitors to ensure quality of work.
  • Participates on departmental and project committees.
  • Plans work according to priorities and project deadlines established by management. Coordinates project implementation activities and resolves problems independently. Refers issues that compromise project timelines and implementation and are outside of project scope, including changes that involve additional costs, to management.
  • Assists with other Transit projects and initiatives as needed.
  • Backs up Transit Systems Administrators, as required.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge and skills are acquired through a 3-year degree/diploma in a related field (including but not limited to Project Management, Computer Science, Information Systems Management), plus 3 years of related experience.
  • Project management skills and experience (planning, organizing, coordinating, evaluating) to create project schedules and plans, prioritize and prepare work in advance, and set realistic timelines.
  • Knowledge of transit applications and systems (e.g., intelligent transportation systems, automatic vehicle location, passenger counting, traveler information).
  • Knowledge of and ability to comply with corporate policies, procedures, standards, and legislation (e.g., privacy).
  • Organization, problem-solving, and analytical skills to develop and recommend project plans and schedules; track, document, and report on project progress; and coordinate project elements and schedules to meet deadlines.
  • Communication skills to obtain, clarify, and exchange technical information with vendors, contractors, and other staff; present information to project teams; and participate as an effective team member.
  • Ability to read and understand technical manuals, work plans, contract terms, agreements, policies, and procedures. Ability to write clear, concise project plans and documentation, schedules, correspondence, training and presentation materials.
  • Computer skills with ability to use software such as Microsoft Office, and various transit systems and applications, including those supporting operations, scheduling, fares, and passenger information.
  • Ability to support and demonstrate the Region's values.
