CBC British Columbia is looking for a Producer to work with Absolutely Canadian and the Creator Network, based in Vancouver.

You will work with independent filmmakers and content creators to turn their story ideas into full length documentaries and short films in the documentary genre for CBC's various platforms - including but not limited to - Gem, YouTube, Tik Tok, Digital, News and Current Affairs, both regionally and nationally.

You will bring a mentoring and development approach to independent filmmakers who are generally emerging; they are new-to-CBC, with diverse lived experiences, and often from underrepresented communities, but with enough filmmaking experience to have their own equipment. You will ensure they are able to deliver fully finalized projects adhering to CBC's specifications.

You will work under the direction of the Executive in Charge of Independent Production for BC and Alberta. You will demonstrate a clear understanding of the objectives of both Absolutely Canadian and the Creator Network, and work with the executive producer to deliver on those objectives. You will identify and connect with independent filmmakers and creators, and collaborate with them to create compelling content for multiple platforms. You will support the program's strategic objectives through their work in expanding and diversifying our content and program offering, and embracing independent production and a diversity of contributors.

*Key Tasks*

  • Seek out and connect with emerging independent documentary filmmakers and content creators from all communities, to develop and sustain relationships with filmmakers and creators new to CBC.
  • Work proactively with CBC programmers to identify the best opportunities and platforms for Absolutely Canadian and Creator Network content, and support strategic rollout of that content.
  • Work with indie filmmakers to create innovative promotion to support the film releases internally and externally.
  • Provide clear feedback and creative guidance on pitches, treatments, scripts and rough cuts.
  • Ensure creators deliver content that meets editorial standards, including CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices.
  • Be able to guide filmmakers in best technical practices and solutions to meet CBC's technical specifications.
  • Ingest, process and archive films for use on all CBC platforms, including but not limited to editing, clipping and writing for TV, Gem, social platforms and FAST.
  • Communicate regularly with the executive producer and the rest of the Absolutely Canadian and Creator Network teams to share learnings, discuss strategies and brainstorm possibilities.
  • Connect with CBC production staff in B.C. and Alberta, and foster a sense of belonging at all CBC stations.
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively across multiple departments, including but not limited to, Business & Rights, Finance and Communications.
  • Update and maintain content and creator tracking documents (Google Workspace).
  • Along with the executive producer, take risks, try new creative treatments and critically review the success of each project.

Qualifications

  • Minimum five years experience working in digital, TV and radio media and documentary production or similar field.
  • Experience in, and passion for, teaching and mentoring freelance contributors and independent producers, particularly those from underrepresented communities.
  • Some familiarity with funding streams and the business of working as an independent filmmaker in Canada.
  • Independent and self-motivated, combined with the ability to work well in a team environment.
  • A strong desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work
  • culture.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to take on and manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong communication and critical thinking skills.
  • Solid understanding of journalistic and programming policies, standards and practices.
  • Familiarity with talent agreements and freelance contracts.
  • Superior writing, vetting and editing skills.
  • Track record of creativity, problem-solving and innovation.
  • Knowledge of the digital space and trends.
  • Knowledge of public relations and marketing of films.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to update and maintain tracking documents.
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts including early starts, late finishes and weekends.
  • Post-secondary degree or equivalent.
