About The Role
As a Casual Early Childhood Educator, you will work on call in short-term and long-term assignments at multiple schools throughout the diverse communities of Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board including Hamilton Mountain, Hamilton Downtown, Waterdown, Flamborough, Dundas, Ancaster, Mount Hope, Binbrook, Stoney Creek and Winona.

You must registered and in good standing with the Ontario College of Early Childhood Educators, or have evidence of initiating the registration process.

Position Summary
Designated Early Childhood Educator (DECE) is a position in the kindergarten classroom filled by an Early Childhood Educator (ECE) registered with the College of Early Childhood Educators.

DECE are accountable to the principal or designate at their assigned school. DECE have a duty to cooperate with the teacher in the classroom and are responsible to collaborate with other educators in the school to meet the needs of students in kindergarten. DECE are expected to utilize The Kindergarten Program document as the curriculum and be aware of the Growing Success: The Kindergarten Addendum.

Duties Include, But Are Not Limited To
Collaborative role working in partnership with a teacher to plan and implement the Kindergarten Program including:

  • Observe, monitor and assess the progress and development of children
  • Prepare documentation of progress and development of students to support the teacher to complete the Communication of Learning (report card)
  • Provide numerous and varied opportunities for children to develop and refine their learning strategies, attitudes, skills, and knowledge
  • Engage children in critical reflection and inquiry, in testing theories, and in discussing and questioning approaches in a play-based program
  • Use a variety of instructional, assessment, and evaluation strategies to meet the needs of individual children, and to plan for next steps
  • Engage in both formal and informal collaborative inquiry with students and other educators
  • Create a learning environment that promotes the development of collaborative skills and critical and creative thinking skills, and support children to become thoughtful problem solvers and effective communicators
  • Complete supervision duties as assigned by the principal or designate
  • Maintain a healthy physical, emotional, and social learning environment
  • Support children with self-help skills (eg eating, toileting, dressing) in a developmentally appropriate manner using teaching and coaching strategies that supports the dignity of the child
  • Support the transition of children to and from before and after-school programs
  • Develop strategies to engage families in their children's learning
