Animal Health Technician (5 days/week)

About the Role
The Animal Health role is responsible for ensuring the overall health and wellness of all GTHS animals by following established SOPs, treatment plans, and medical protocols. This includes conducting intake examinations within 24 hours of an animal's arrival, preparing and interpreting diagnostics such as urinalysis and ear swabs, and monitoring medical treatments and prescriptions for accuracy and compliance.
Working closely with the Animal Care Management, Care Coordinators, and the Veterinarian, this role helps maintain optimal health across both shelter and foster environments.
The position also requires maintaining thorough and up-to-date medical records in PetPoint, ensuring real-time entry of exams, memos, and treatments, and communicating all medical assessments, conditions, and disclosures to staff, volunteers, and adopters. A commitment to maintaining a safe, healthy, and supportive work environment in alignment with relevant legislation and regulations is essential.
Permanent, 40 hrs per week 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, Tuesday – Saturday on-site at the GTHS Animal Centre. Off-site, evenings, weekends, and after-hours work may be required infrequently.
What You'll Bring
- Post-secondary education in Animal Science, Veterinary Technologies, Animal Care, or equivalent work experience.
- Certification as a Registered Veterinary Technician is considered an asset.
- Experience working in a veterinary hospital is an asset and a solid understanding of shelter medicine would be ideal
- Ability to work with all temperaments and sizes of cats and dogs with basic animal handling, and/or animal behaviour (aligned with GTHS handling protocols)
- Strong time management and interpersonal skills as well as demonstrated leadership capabilities
- Establish and maintain positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally, to achieve the goals of the organization
- Speak, listen, and write in a clear, thorough, and timely manner using appropriate and effective communication tools and techniques
- Work cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problems, and make decisions that enhance the health and wellbeing of the animals in our care
- Demonstrates understanding and passion for animal welfare congruent with our values
- Self-motivated with a proven ability to complete tasks with competency and accuracy
- Strong computer proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite of programs (MS Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and data entry with keen attention to detail and accuracy.
- Able to learn and utilize multiple databases/systems simultaneously
- Knowledge of or experience with PetPoint or CRM database systems is an asset

Working Conditions
This role requires work with animals on-site (feline and canine) in a high-volume shelter environment. This position necessitates regular contact and some hands-on work with animals of diverse breeds, sizes, and behaviors. The work environment inherently contains common animal-related allergens, including but not limited to fur, dander, and cleaning agents. This role also requires prolonged sitting (up to 8 hours/day), computer usage for extended periods, as well as standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 30 pounds as necessary. Additional duties may include performing physical tasks related to animal handling, cleaning, and general facility maintenance. This role may require working alone and closing the animal centre. As such, you are able to perform all the essential duties of the position in such an environment.
