About the Role:

Reporting to the Director, Event Operations, the Manager, Events - Sports is a key leader within the Event Operations team, responsible for the planning and execution of all sporting events hosted at Rogers Place.

This role oversees the operational delivery of Edmonton Oilers and Edmonton Oil Kings home games while leading the production of large-scale, high-profile international and professional sporting events including National Lacrosse League, WNBA, NBA, PWHL Take Over, Hlinka Gretzky Cup, IIHF World Juniors, and other Hockey Canada tournaments. The successful candidate brings a blend of strategic leadership, operational expertise, and relationship management to ensure exceptional event experiences that meet OEG's world-class standards

Your Focus in this Role:

Leadership & Team Development

  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and day-to-day direction to two full-time Event Coordinators and the part-time Events Team and Event Supervisors.
  • Foster a collaborative and high-performing culture focused on safety, service excellence, and continuous improvement.
  • Lead pre-event briefings, production meetings, and post-event debriefs with internal and external stakeholders.

Event Planning & Execution

  • Oversee full-cycle planning, scheduling, budgeting, and execution of all assigned sporting events.
  • Oversee the Event Coordinators responsible for Oilers and Oil Kings home games, ensuring operational excellence, brand alignment, and an exceptional fan experience.
  • Lead execution of large-scale and international sporting events, collaborating closely with league representatives, promoters, and governing bodies.
  • Coordinate logistics related to Hockey Operations, conversions, and building readiness between hockey and concert configurations.
  • Develop and maintain event documentation, including manifests, detail sheets, and operational checklists.

Client & Stakeholder Relations

  • Act as the primary contact for clients, leagues, and event partners from concept through completion.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with promoters, rights holders, and venue stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with internal departments (Security, Guest Experience, Conversions, F&B, etc.) to ensure flawless event delivery.
  • Prepare event budgets, cost estimates, and reconciliations in coordination with the Finance department.

Operational Excellence

  • Develop and refine departmental SOPs and training materials to enhance efficiency and consistency in event execution.
  • Evaluate event outcomes and implement lessons learned to optimize future performance.
  • Manage vendor relationships and outside service contracts including labor, security, first aid, and parking.
  • Contribute to long-term event strategy and operational planning for future major sports programming.
  • Other projects as assigned

Education, Experience and Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in Event Management, Sports Management, Business, or related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Minimum 5-7 years of progressive experience in large-scale sports and entertainment event management within a major venue or professional sports environment.
  • Proven track record of success managing complex, multi-stakeholder sporting events.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and develop a team in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
  • Exceptional organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain positive relationships across all levels of an organization.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and event management software.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by the event schedule.
