Paulson Development Ltd., the trailblazing underground utility construction company, is on the lookout for a BACKHOE OPERATOR.
Location: Alberta, On the Road.. because we like our office with a view.
Salary: $28.00-$35.00 per hour based on experience and 3 month probationary period
Per Diem (if located over 1 hr from job site): $200 per day or LOA
Work Rotation: Currently Monday to Friday, weekend overtime occasionally available. Some projects require 21 work days / 7 non-work days
Hours: Typically 8-12 hour work days
Responsibilities:
- Operate a backhoe and other excavation equipment safely and efficiently to support underground utility installation and site preparation.
- Excavate trenches, pits, and other areas according to project plans, ensuring precision and avoiding damage to underground infrastructure.
- Read and interpret utility locates, permits, blueprints, and work orders to execute work accurately and safely.
- Work closely with the crew, including Locators and Drillers, to maintain awareness of utility locations and site conditions.
- Perform routine equipment checks and thorough pre- and post-operation inspections, reporting any mechanical issues or safety concerns promptly.
- Adhere to all safety protocols, company procedures, and regulatory requirements to minimize risk and ensure a safe work environment.
- Maintain detailed and accurate records, including equipment usage logs, inspection forms, and daily reports.
- Ensure proper backfilling and site restoration following excavation activities, prioritizing public safety and environmental responsibility.
- Support job site efficiency by assisting with material handling, site cleanup, and other duties as needed.
- Adapt to changing site conditions and job requirements while maintaining professionalism and productivity.
Qualifications:
- Mandatory: Min. Class 5 drivers license
- Proven experience operating backhoes and excavation equipment in a construction or utility setting (2+ years).
- Strong understanding of underground utility work, including safe digging practices and protection of existing infrastructure.
- Ability to read and interpret utility locates, construction drawings, and work orders accurately.
- Excellent situational awareness and communication skills to coordinate effectively with site crews and supervisors.
- Solid understanding of ground disturbance procedures and safe excavation practices.
- Demonstrated commitment to prioritizing health and safety
- Excellent written and communication skills
- Physical prowess: If lifting 50+ pounds is your warm-up, you're the one we want.
- Current safety tickets including CSTS 2020, First Aid, Ground Disturbance, and WHMIS 2015 are considered an asset. Additional compulsory company safety course will be provided prior to work start
