Pay Grade
The annual salary range is $70,437- $112,872 (at 100% appointment) and is based on qualifications, experience, and the placement criteria of Article 14 of the NICFA Collective agreement.
Position Summary
The Instructor, Indigenous Education is responsible for the respectful delivery, facilitation, and evaluation of Indigenous‑led, distinctions‑based, non-credit learning experience at North Island College, aligned to Working Together: North Island College's Indigenization Plan (2021–2026). This role is grounded in relationships with Indigenous Nations whose territories the college operates on and upholds the protocols, teachings, and curriculum integrity co-developed with those Nations, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and the Indigenous Education Council (IEC).
The instructor will facilitate Journeying to Reconciliation (a mandatory institutional learning experience delivered in Brightspace) and support the delivery of local First Nations digital core-competency modules. This role is a relational, protocol-based facilitation role situated outside of for-credit instruction and focused on carrying out responsibilities entrusted by community.
The position collaborates closely with NIC Elders in Residence, Knowledge Keepers, the Indigenous Education Facilitator, the IEC, and other partners to ensure the delivery remains Indigenous-led, trauma-aware, antiracist, and accessible—and that feedback loops remain accountable to community. The ideal candidate will have an established relationship with at least one of the Nations whose modules are being delivered, and will be able to uphold the cultural, political, and ethical obligations that this trust entails.

Duties & Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
Facilitation & Delivery
- Prepare and facilitate synchronous and asynchronous learning in Brightspace and Kaltura sessions for Journeying to Reconciliation and local Nations modules.
- Steward protocols and relationships that underpin the curriculum; facilitate learning in alignment with community guidance and IEC direction.
- Co‑facilitate or host sessions with Elders in Residence and Knowledge Keepers, ensuring appropriate introductions, space‑holding, and honoraria processes are followed.
- Use decolonial, antiracist , trauma‑aware approaches; hold productive discomfort while consistently interrupting harm and recentering Indigenous perspectives.
Local Nations Focus (content areas)
- Deliver modules that explore pre‑colonial history, language, culture, impacts of colonization, resilience, and present‑day contexts for:
- K'ómoks First Nation
- Ligʷiɫdax̌ʷ Nations (We Wai Kai, We Wai Kum, Kwiakah)
- Kwagu'ł First Nation and Kwakwa̱ka̱'wakw Peoples
- c̓išaaʔatḥ (Tseshaht) First Nation
- Hupačasath First Nation and Nuu‑chah‑nulth Nations
- Support learners to connect personal roles, responsibilities, and commitments to Indigenization and reconciliation within their work units.
Learner Support & Assessment
- Provide clear expectations, timely feedback, and supportive coaching to learners; hold office hours and respond to inquiries in a timely manner.
- Use Brightspace and Kaltura tools (quizzes, discussions, assignments, checklists, communications, and analytics) to track progress and identify supports.
- Ensure the learning environment is accessible and adheres to Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and adult learning best practices.
Coordination & Quality Assurance
- Coordinate session schedules, guest contributors, technology needs, and materials; ensure captioning and accessibility for digital content.
- Handle logistics with Elders/Knowledge Keepers (e.g., scheduling, tech checks, appropriate openings/closings, honoraria administration in coordination with staff).
- Gather and integrate feedback from Elders, Knowledge Keepers, Nations, and learners to support continuous improvement; provide progress summaries and facilitation notes to Indigenous Education.
- Maintain confidentiality and uphold community protocols, NIC policies, and ethical obligations connected to Indigenous‑led curriculum.
Collaboration & Reporting
- Work closely throughout the process with the Indigenous Education Facilitator, Indigenous Education staff, and community partners to align delivery with established curriculum.
- Contribute to iterative refinement by flagging content or flow adjustments to the Curriculum Developer/Indigenous Education team.
- Produce brief reports on participation, completion, learner feedback themes, and recommendations for improvement.
Required Education & Experience
Minimum two (2) years of experience teaching or facilitating Indigenous‑focused non-credit (preferred) or credited courses or professional learning at the post‑secondary level (or comparable institutional setting).
Demonstrated experience facilitating in digital/online environments (e.g., Brightspace, Kaltura or similar LMS).
Applied knowledge of local First Nations in the NIC service region (culture, language, history, protocols, and current context).
Proven ability to apply UDL, adult learning principles, and metacognitive strategies in facilitation.
Strong skills in organization, planning, time management, and project coordination.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team structure.
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; strong presentation and group facilitation abilities.
Bachelor's Degree with emphasis on Indigenous Knowledge is desirable;
Master's Degree in Indigenous Education/Indigenous Language is desirable.

- Capacity to steward Nation-developed curriculum with care, including upholding ceremonial protocols, community-defined expectations, and ethical delivery practices.
- Demonstrated antiracist , decolonial, and trauma‑aware facilitation practice.
- Cultural humility and the ability to facilitate decolonial, antiracist , and trauma-aware learning environments.
- Experience working closely and respectfully with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, scholars, and Indigenous communities in protocol‑informed ways.
- Proficiency with learning technologies and standard computer applications; comfortable with Brightspace delivery, communications, and analytics.
- Ability to navigate sensitive topics, support learners through discomfort, and interrupt harm while maintaining a culturally safe space.
- Strong relationship‑building skills, humility, reflective practice, and accountability to community guidance.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and uphold ethical standards related to Indigenous‑led curriculum and community‑shared knowledge.
