Position Purpose: The Seasonal Horticulture staff are responsible for assisting full-time horticulture staff in the completion of daily tasks in plant health, animal welfare related to horticulture, along with landscape maintenance and safety. This position will assist and provide support in implementing the Strategic Plan.
Core Role Responsibilities:- Assists in the preparation, planting and maintenance of annual, shrub and perennial garden beds.
- Maintains turf areas as per instructions.
- Prioritizes guest, animal, and staff safety through learned landscape management practices.
- Operates a variety of horticulture equipment, safely and efficiently.
- May operate trucks and assorted motorized vehicles.
- Cleans and maintains tools, equipment and vehicles.
- Enhances guest experience by answering guest questions and providing other assistance as required.
- Follows all policies and branch instructions.
- Attends appropriate training as required.
- Must be currently enrolled in a post-secondary program related to horticulture or the equivalent amount of training and related experience.
- Must have a minimum 1 year of proven experience in horticulture or related fields, which could include formal study, hands-on work, or a combination of both.
- Self-motivated and capable of working independently with minimal supervision while also being an effective team player who collaborates well with others.
- Must ensure all applicable licenses and certificates remain valid and in good standing. Copies of licenses and certificates to be provided at time of hire and upon renewal.
- Well-developed interpersonal skills, along with strong communications skills.
- Working knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and WHMIS legislation an asset.
- An asset to possess an unrestricted Class G driver's license valid in the Province of Ontario, along with a good driving record.
- Must be available to work weekends, shifts, and holidays as scheduled.
- Flexibility to start shifts as early as 6 a.m. is required.
- Must be able to deal with staff and public in a courteous and efficient manner.
- Must be capable of meeting the physical demands of the position, including the ability to lift and carry weights ranging from 23 to 44 lbs.
