EARLYON REGISTERED EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATOR (RECE) - JOB DESCRIPTION

Overview

The Early ON RECE reports to the Managers of Makonsag Aboriginal Head Start Inc. (Makonsag). The Early ON RECE is responsible for delivering the Early ON programming by providing services to meet the early years needs of providers and parents of children ages 0 to 6 in accordance with the mandate of the Board of Directors and governing legislation under the Child Care and Early Years Act (CCEYA); for the quality delivery of an early childhood development program focused on cultural and early learning.

Responsibilities & Duties

· Provide guidance to the program's families and children through implementing program plans.

· Plan and facilitate stimulating and developmentally and culturally appropriate early learning programming.

· Provide a welcoming and nurturing environment and room activities to address group and individual learning needs.

· Maintain a healthy and safe environment as per Makonsag policies and procedures and Ministry requirements

· Attend meetings and/or professional development sessions as required

· Promote an atmosphere of caring, sharing, honesty and respect

· Other duties as required

EARLY LEARNING ACTIVITIES

a)      Plans and develops varied playgroup programs at satellite locations across Ottawa to meet child and adult needs; plans cultural activities appropriate to the ages and developmental stages of the children which include art, dramatic play, science, music, language, sensory activities on the land activities to enable parents and caregivers to provide similar developmental activities in the home and elsewhere.

b)      Implements program plans; provides a welcoming, nurturing environment and activities which encourage interaction among children and adults across culture; role models appropriate interaction and behaviour management techniques with children; supports adults in solving problems with understanding and referrals to culturally appropriate resources and programs.

c)      Assists in the management and maintenance of the program's resource libraries; identifies the need for the purchase of play materials suitable for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, school-aged children, and children with special needs; identifies the need for the purchase of resource books; assists in the development and maintenance of the large equipment program.

d)      Coordinates literacy and other learning activities as an effective basis for language acquisition skills

2. INFORMATION AND REFERRAL

a)      Coordinates and provides culturally appropriate information and advice to parents/caregivers on such topics as parenting, developmental milestones, pre- and post-natal care.

b)      Provides information and helps parents link to other early years programs and services in the community, such as child care services, health services, assessment services and recreation programs.

c)      Assists in supporting and informing the parents/caregivers and the community through written resource materials, newsletters, and other means of communication; provides services to on-site clients; responds to telephone and e-mail requests.

d)      Maintains and develops Early Years information and resources

e)      Identifies parents/caregivers training needs; develops training plans and arranges workshops meeting identified needs; plans and delivers the workshops when needed.

3.  Administrative / Program

a)      Maintain attendance records.

b)      Keep administrative files/binders in an orderly, confidential manner.

c)      Maintain an inventory of supplies for the program; purchase program supplies as required.

d)      Invite speakers and community representatives/Elders to participate in programming activities as required.

e)      Ensure venues are booked for activities as required.

f Operate, maintain and care for personal computer and peripherals for the efficient performance of duties.

g)      Stay informed of current resources and new approaches in the field.

3.  Organizational

a)      Attend staff meetings, other meeting and/or professional development sessions as required.

b)      Comply with all Makonsag policies and procedures.

c)      Demonstrate solution-based problem-solving and effective conflict resolution.

d)      Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of the children and families in the program.

e)      Participate in Employee Performance Review and Planning Guide.

f Participate in a team-based approach with colleagues at all times.

4.  Maintenance

a Ensure the play materials and supplies are stored orderly, accessible and safe.

b Keep the rooms and equipment clean, safe and orderly by:

o   Set up/take down room; clear toys, books, craft supplies and artwork between sessions; clear tables/chairs and clean/sanitize them between sessions.

o   Inspect toys regularly for breakage to ensure they are safe to use.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

  • Early Childhood Education (ECE) Diploma
  • Registered and in good standing with the College of Early Childhood Educators
  •  Safe Food Handlers Certificate or willingness to obtain
  •  Standard First Aid, including infant and child CPR
     Police record check (vulnerable sector) completed in the last 6 months
  •  Knowledge of COVID-19 Policies in an Early Years setting;
  • Medical certification of good health; immunizations up-to-date unless seeking exemption and
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccine (Dose 1 & 2).
  • 2+ years demonstrated experience working in child care environment
  • Knowledge of Indigenous culture and traditions
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to the needs of Indigenous children and families
  • Experience and working knowledge of ELECT and the Child Care and Early Years Act
  • Ability to respond effectively to crisis situations, Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training (CPI) an asset
  • Proven ability to work in a collaborative team environment and communicate openly with team members, management and families
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Fluency or some knowledge of Indigenous language an asset
  • Demonstrate initiative and flexibility, with the ability to adapt quickly to situations in a dynamic work environment
  • Ability to function effectively in a high stress, high noise environment
  • Ability to plan and implement learning activities based on curriculum
  • Enthusiasm, flexibility, dedication and commitment to children and their learning

· Access to a car is essential

· Availability to work flexible hours

· Experience and working knowledge of 'How Does Learning Happen?' pedagogy and the Child Care and Early Years Act
