The Structural Steel Superintendent oversees all onsite structural steel erection activities to ensure projects are executed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with engineering drawings, quality standards, and project schedules. This role leads field crews, coordinates subcontractors, liaises with site leadership, and ensures compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.
This position can be based in Calgary or Edmonton, but will require travel to project sites.
What You Will Be Working On
Site Leadership & Coordination
- Direct and supervise structural steel erection crews, including ironworkers, equipment operators, and subcontractors.
- Coordinate daily activities with Project Managers, General Superintendents, Safety teams, and other trades.
- Conduct daily pre-task meetings, toolbox talks, and crew briefings.
- Ensure site logistics, equipment, tools, and materials are planned and available to support uninterrupted workflow.
Safety Management
- Enforce company safety policies, provincial/federal regulations, and trade-specific best practices.
- Lead and document safety inspections, hazard assessments, and incident investigations.
- Ensure full compliance with fall protection, rigging, crane operations, and elevated work procedures.
Quality Assurance
- Verify field installation aligns with fabrication drawings, specifications, and engineering requirements.
- Identify and resolve discrepancies or constructability issues in coordination with Engineering and Quality teams.
- Oversee bolt-up, weld sequencing, alignment, plumb/level checks, and final inspections.
Scheduling & Productivity
- Develop and maintain short‑interval (daily/weekly) schedules in alignment with overall project milestones.
- Monitor crew productivity and adjust manpower or equipment needs as required.
- Proactively address delays, sequencing changes, and site constraints.
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain accurate daily reports, time sheets, equipment logs, and progress tracking.
- Report site issues, delays, safety incidents, and material shortages promptly.
- Participate in coordination meetings and progress reviews with project leadership.
Stakeholder & Trade Coordination
- Collaborate closely with cranes, rigging teams, welders, and other involved trades.
- Ensure smooth site handoffs, sequencing, and access planning with other structural and architectural disciplines.
- Communicate clearly with client representatives, inspectors, and safety officers as needed.
What We Are Looking For
- 8+ years of structural steel erection experience, including several years in a leadership/supervisory role.
- Journeyman Ironworker (preferred) or equivalent experience.
- Experience with crane operations, hoisting plans, rigging, and lift coordination.
- Background in commercial, industrial, or major project structural steel erection.
Technical Skills
- Ability to read and interpret structural drawings, erection plans, and blueprints.
- Strong knowledge of structural steel connections, welding, bolting, and alignment.
- Proficient in safety practices related to fall protection, rigging, aerial lifts, and heavy equipment.
- Familiarity with scheduling software and construction management tools (e.g., Procore, MS Project).
Soft Skills
- Strong leadership, communication, and team‑building capabilities.
- Effective problem‑solving and decision-making skills under pressure.
- High attention to detail and commitment to quality and safety.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
- Ability to work at heights, in varying weather conditions, and in physically demanding environments.
- Ability to climb, lift up to 50 lbs, and navigate active construction sites.
- Willingness to work extended hours or shift schedules based on project needs
