The Learning Assistance Program (LAC) is designed for students Grade 8 through 12 with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities. Students typically exhibit academic, language, and social delays. The program emphasizes functional academics, community awareness, health and physical fitness, consumer education, vocational preparation, and work experience. Students are integrated into electives whenever possible.
The successful candidate should have an education and/or successful teaching experience in Special Education, as well as secondary Mathematics and Science.
The successful candidate will be working as part of a team ( 2 LAC support teachers and 2 SSAs) and will have demonstrated the ability to work as a professional team member. As the program teacher, you will deliver Mathematics and Science to Junior and Senior students and improve students' social and academic performance.
Responsibilities in supporting the LAC program include, but are not limited to:
- assisting with a variety of assessments, including curriculum-based, informal, and formal assessments
- assisting with the direct instruction to students using a variety of teaching and management strategies
- developing, implementing, and evaluating individualized and class-wide positive behaviour support plans
- liaising with parents, school, and district staff, as well as outside agencies
- coordinating with SSAs to support students in the program and various elective courses
- case management(Resources Teacher) for senior students in the LAC program
The successful candidate will also be working as part of the Learning Hub team ( 4 other teachers and 2 SSAs) and will have demonstrated the ability to work as a professional team member. Non-enrolling support will involve working with various subject teachers to improve students' social and academic performance. Responsibilities in the Learning Hub support model program include:
- conducting a variety of assessments, including casual observation, curriculum-based, informal, and formal
- implementing and evaluating individualized education plans(IEPs)
- developing, implementing, and evaluating individualized and class-wide positive behaviour support plans
- providing direct instruction to students using a variety of teaching and management strategies
- supporting students in integrated academics and assisting students in transitioning
- liaising with parents, school, and district staff, as well as outside agencies
- coordinating with teachers to support students in classrooms and within the Learning Hub
SCHOOL PROFILE:
The Junior/Senior LAC program is a district Special Education program for students in Grades 8-12 with mild intellectual impairments who require modified academics and support in all aspects of their learning. There is an enrolling and non-enrolling teacher with two full SSAs assigned to help support students in their program classes and electives.
Vancouver Technical is a school of 1600 students with a diverse and active school population. The school offers a wide variety of programs that meet a range of students' needs, including Summit, Flex Humanities, and French Immersion ( all District Programs of Choice) and three programs intended to support students with various learning challenges. Qualifications
- Completion of a Bachelor of Education
- Completion of one of the following: Master's in Special Education, D iploma in Special Education, and/or one year Full-Time Continuing contract as a Special Education/Resource Teacher
- Education/experience teaching Secondary Mathematics and Science
- BC Teaching Certificate
- Registration with the Teacher Qualification Service
