Course InformationThis course focuses on the design of teaching and learning for faith formation and religious education in Catholic secondary schools in Ontario. Teacher candidates will learn about the design of professional lessons, effective pedagogies and contemporary foundations of religious education, catechism, family life and the Ontario Catholic Curriculum. Candidates will discern leading practices for teaching courses in Catholic secondary schools to integrate faith, reason and discernment among students. .5 credit.
This course is taught online (synchronous).
The Faculty of Education at Western University invites applications for a Limited Duties (LD) Instructor to coordinate and teach the course Teaching in Roman Catholic Secondary Schools within the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) program. This online, synchronous course prepares teacher candidates for professional teaching practice in Ontario Catholic secondary schools by focusing on effective lesson design, faith formation, and the integration of Catholic values and worldview into pedagogical practice.
Rooted in the Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations and curricula such as Growing in Faith, Growing in Christ, the course encourages candidates to critically explore catechesis, religious education, Catholic social teachings, sacramental preparation, and family life education. It emphasizes leadership in spiritual development and the integration of faith and reason in secondary-level instruction.
Summary of Responsibilities:
- Design and deliver high-quality, interactive online instruction aligned with the Ontario Catholic Secondary School curriculum and Catholic educational principles.
- Support teacher candidates in applying faith-based pedagogical approaches to their subject areas.
- Guide critical reflection on catechetical content, spiritual formation, and religious identity in Catholic secondary schools.
- Facilitate discussions on Catholic worldview integration, discernment, and moral leadership in the classroom.
- Provide timely and constructive feedback on candidate assignments and participation.
- Foster a respectful, inclusive, and supportive virtual classroom climate that reflects Catholic values.
- Collaborate with the B.Ed. program team to ensure consistency in course expectations and outcomes.
You will be responsible for all activities associated with the successful delivery of the course, including but not limited to: developing, preparing, and delivering the course; setting and marking examinations, assessing the academic work of students, and reporting grades.
Candidates must be willing to undertake training as required by the Employer including, but not limited to, training in respect of health and safety, harassment and discrimination, and legislated service standards.
QualificationsRequired Qualifications:
Master's degree or equivalent in Religious Education, Theology, Catholic Education, or a closely related field.
Demonstrated qualifications and experience teaching Religious Education in Roman Catholic schools, particularly at the secondary level.
Record of effective teaching performance in post-secondary or teacher education settings.
Strong knowledge of Ontario's Religious Education curriculum and Catholic Graduate Expectations.
Preferred Qualifications / Assets:
Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) certification in good standing (current) or held within the last five years.
Master of Divinity, Master of Theological Studies, or equivalent theological education.
OCT Specialist Qualification in Religious Education in Catholic Schools.
Experience with Catholic curriculum integration, liturgical education, and faith formation strategies.
Demonstrated ability to guide teacher candidates in spiritual leadership, ethical classroom practice, and the integration of Catholic worldview into teaching.

Course offerings could be assigned to the workload of full-time faculty or to part-time faculty with seniority or preference rights in accordance with the Faculty Collective Agreement, or left unfilled based on operational/enrolment requirements. All positions are subject to budget approval.
