Course InformationSupporting struggling readers and writers across intermediate and secondary curriculum areas. Topics include accommodations, modifications, assistive technology, strategy instruction in reading and writing, and interventions in decoding and spelling. Relates these topics to students with, and without, identified exceptionalities. Balances classroom practice with a critical understanding of current research issues. .25 credit.
This course is taught online (synchronous).
The Faculty of Education at Western University is inviting applications for a Limited Duties Instructor to teach EDUC 5440: Supporting Struggling Readers and Writers in the Secondary Classroom in the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) program.
The course focuses on developing teacher candidates' knowledge and practical strategies to support struggling readers and writers across all subject areas at the intermediate and secondary levels. Emphasis is placed on inclusive, responsive instruction, supported by current research and evidence-based classroom practices.
- Design and deliver interactive and engaging online course content aligned with the Ontario curriculum and B.Ed. program outcomes.
- Teach weekly synchronous sessions.
- Foster a collaborative and inclusive online learning environment that addresses the diverse needs of secondary students.
- Integrate evidence-based instructional and assessment strategies for students with and without exceptionalities.
- Introduce assistive technologies and AI tools used to support adolescent literacy development.
- Assess and provide timely feedback on student assignments and professional engagement.
- Maintain ongoing communication with students and respond to academic concerns promptly.
- Collaborate with the program team and adhere to Faculty expectations regarding course reporting and delivery.
You will be responsible for all activities associated with the successful delivery of the course, including but not limited to: developing, preparing, and delivering the course; setting and marking examinations, assessing the academic work of students, and reporting grades.
Candidates must be willing to undertake training as required by the Employer including, but not limited to, training in respect of health and safety, harassment and discrimination, and legislated service standards.
QualificationsQualifications (Minimum Required):
- A Master's degree or equivalent in Education or a related field (e.g., Curriculum Studies, Literacy Education, Special Education).
- Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) certification in good standing.
- Demonstrated successful teaching experience at the Intermediate and/or Senior level, particularly with students requiring literacy support.
- Experience with inclusive teaching strategies and responsive literacy instruction.
- Familiarity with current adolescent literacy research and relevant Ontario curriculum and Ministry policy documents.
- Ability to teach effectively in online synchronous environments, including proficiency with platforms such as Zoom and Brightspace (or equivalent LMS).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Additional qualifications in Special Education, Reading, or Learning Disabilities (e.g., Reading Specialist or Special Education Specialist AQ).
- Prior experience teaching in teacher education or mentoring adult learners.
- Familiarity with assistive technologies used in literacy intervention (e.g., text-to-speech, speech-to-text, screen readers).
- Experience designing and delivering online courses using multiple modalities (e.g., multimedia, case-based learning, digital discussions).
