What You'll Do
The Victim Services Coordinator is responsible for providing comprehensive support to individuals affected by crime, including: culturally appropriate emotional support, advocacy, resource connection (such as counseling, creating support plans, land-based healing programs, etc.), personalized safety planning, and ongoing support for families impacted by the MMIWG2S+ crisis. This position entails maintaining accurate and confidential records of reported crimes and interactions, as well as assisting members with reporting crimes directly to the RCMP.
A main component of the role includes education initiatives through outreach programs and workshops on various topics (such as victim rights and resources, preventative measures that contribute to staying safe, etc.) collaborating with community members and local authorities to create a community safety plan, and contributing to the development of prevention initiatives and awareness campaigns. Other related duties.
The Victim Services Coordinator is not an entry-level position; it is newly established and requires capacity building. The Coordinator will report to the Justice Programs Manager while working closely with the Director of Justice to shape the role and receive ongoing support.
Valued Qualifications
Experience:
- Postsecondary/relevant certification(s) in social work, social sciences, or related field (or equivalent experience);
- 2-3 years of experience in case management practices, preferably in a social service/healthcare setting;
- 2-3 years of experience in assessing needs, developing service plans, and coordinating care, and;
- 2-3 years of facilitating programs and/or leading initiatives.
Knowledge:
- Understanding of the MMIWG2S+ crisis;
- Familiarity with the challenges victims experience in the criminal justice system, including understanding trauma and its impact;
- Familiarity with the criminal justice system, and;
- Familiarity with Indigenous models of justice and conflict resolution.
Skills:
- Proficient computer skills such as MS Office Suite and/or Google Workspace products;
- Skills in creating comprehensive plans for individual and community support, and;
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Abilities:
- Ability to demonstrate empathy and active listening;
- Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams, including law enforcement, social services, community members, community organizations, and within the workplace;
- Ability to adapt and use outside the box thinking for services/programs based on the client's comfortability, circumstances, and cultural/spiritual preferences, and;
- Ability to speak Dene and/or Cree is an asset.
Other (required):
- Satisfactory completion of a police information check is required;
- Ability to provide own transportation to work;
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License and Drivers Abstract, and;
- Other certificates: First Aid, Food Safe Level 1, WHMIS is an asset;
Work Setting
Majority of the work takes place Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. with occasional needs for programming outside regular hours. The majority of work occurs at various public/employer buildings on reserve. Requirement to travel to several sites on reserve.
