Nokiiwin Tribal Council requires one (1) experienced highly motivated Environmental Health Officer to work collaboratively with partners to deliver high-quality health protection services and advocacy to Indigenous peoples. Key Responsibilities:
- Responsible for providing health services to our member communities including, drinking water, food safety, housing, wastewater, solid waste disposal, facilities inspections, communicable disease control and emergency preparedness and response.
- Committed to transfer of core services to First Nations
- Working in partnership with First Nations to deliver the above core programs
- Investigate, evaluate, and deal with health-related complaints that are connected to environmental factors.
- Inspect to ensure equipment, materials, production processes and sanitary conditions within schools, public and private facilities, and institutions to prevent safety and health risks
- Conduct surveys and monitor the natural environment to identify sources of pollution, including safety and environmental inspections
- Collect samples of water for analysis
- Measure physical, biological and chemical workplace hazards.
- Investigate health and safety related complaints, spills of hazardous chemicals, outbreaks of diseases or poisonings and workplace accidents
- Develop, implement, and evaluate health and safety programs and plans
- Put into practice procedures to fine or to close an establishment that break municipal, provincial, or federal regulations
- Provide advice and give training programs to First Nations communities, on issues that relate to public health, environmental protection.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in Health Sciences (Public Health) or Environmental Public Health or some other speciality relevant to the duties of the position.
- Successful completion of a course of full-time instruction in Public Health Inspection or Environmental Public Health at a recognized post-secondary institution.
- An acceptable combination of Environmental Public Health Education, training, at least five (5) years experience working in the field of Environmental Public Health, as well as a certificate in Public Health Inspection (Canada).
- Certificate in Public Health Inspection is required for this position.
- Experience in providing the delivery of environmental public health services (e.g., environmental public health inspections, investigations, drinking water quality monitoring, wastewater monitoring, environmental public health education, environmental public health promotion, environmental public health training etc.).
- Experience in providing recommendations on environmental public health matters.
- Knowledge of and experience working with First Nations, with preference given to those familiar with our member communities
- Knowledge and skill using computer hardware, software, and printers
- Excellent understanding of data administration and management functions (collection, analysis, distribution etc.)
- Familiarity with modern database and information systems technologies
- Excellent written and oral communications skills
- Strong communications, time management and problem-solving skills
- Fluency in Anishinaabek, knowledge and appreciation of Anishinaabek culture and heritage are assets
- Organizational and problem-solving skills, as well as attention to detail
- Willingness to travel extensively to Nokiiwin member First Nations and a valid driver's licence
- Successful completion of a Level 1 Police Criminal Reference Check (PCRC)
